“Should have read about this place before booking”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

As we approached from across the road we thought that the building was derelict and maybe we were at the wrong address, unfortunately we wasn't. We had the room with the cut-out door (see photo's posted by previous reviewers), it was small and the en-suite was tiny, you had to stand in shower tray to use the small wash basin. In the morning we couldn't face the thought of having the continental breakfast, we just wanted to get away from the depressing place.
If we have reason to visit Dover again we will book elsewhere and we recommend others to do the same.

Room Tip: Drive past it

We didn't check the Trip-advisor first and as we only found 2 hostels in Dover this was "the best" option (42 pounds 2 people). When we arrived it was depressing to see the hostel from outside, it looks like an old jail. my boyfriend and i had to stay waiting until 3 because there was no one to open the door before that, in top of that when we finally got to see the "receptionist" There was a mistake on the booking and they thought it was for the the day when we made the reservation and they didnt gave us the money back. Awful smell, dirty and rude staff. Very disappointing they have this hostel on Hostel World.

Firstly I could only find 2 hostels in Dover and the other had worse reviews. The Dover area is obviously not very prosperous and there is not an abundance of high quality backpacker accommodation as in other parts of the world. Considering this, the hostel was clean and central with a good breakfast. However, the rooms are small, stairways cramped and the building has mould / damp issues that have been painted over rather than addressed. The owner was brusque, but business like.

Sadly I didn't read the reviews on Trip Advisor, even as a budget traveller I have standards that include clean bedding. The sheets may have been clean but were so crumpled it was hard to tell however the very cheap duvet was filthy. The blind was covered in dirt and mould and didn't fit the window so bright light came into the room from dawn. The shower room smelt strongly of mould. The sad thing is that it looks as if someone has tried to update and tidy the Alma but the day to day housekeeping is so poor the updates are pointless. Don't both staying here even though it is a stones throw to the port, spend the extra rennet and stay somewhere else!

My partner and I spent a single night booked via hotels.com and although other people have complained about the standards it is only a Hostel and not a high ranking hotel.

We had a double bed room which was not massive but had enough space for the two of us and our bags which were minimal as it was a one night stay.

Also the shower area was small but still able to get a comfortable shower with no real problems to raise.
The addition of a help yourself kitchen facilities on the second floor is also a good idea.
Kettle, Tea, Coffee, Biscuits, Cereal, Milk and even a Microwave...!

I think many of the other reviews given are people expecting to much as in hotel standards.
This is a budget hostel when hotels in Dover can be anything from £60.00 / Person.
So you gets what's you pays for.

Owner turns off hot water. Room was moldy and you could see it everywhere. Everything smelled! The room was small but the bathroom was so small you couldn't stand up in it!

Asked for some money back due to the conditions and was called a liar and yelled at in front of other guests in the 'dining room'

Do not book here! Stay away!

This has got to be the worst place ever to stay. The hallway, corridor and room stunk of mould .The carpets where filthy and the stairway was so narrow, that anything bigger than a laptop bag was a struggle to get up them. The room was the size of a shoe box!! with no where to put your luggage. The people in charge where unhelpful (when I booked I said one of us was disabled and they promptly gave us a room on the second floor!! and would not help with the luggage, because as they said "it was a hostel, not a hotel!!"). I am so glad we only booked the one night, as we could not get out that place fast enough. Please pay the extra and stay else where, and avoid this place at all cost.

Room Tip: Just don't book here!!
