Brewer's Fayre chain restaurant - the meal was not expensive and we got what we paid for. Overall a good experience.

Wow whats happened to brewers fayre at the Duke of York- friendly ,caring efficient staff, good food at realistic prices, great drinks offers to complement our meals in a clean and well cared for environment. Well done to the managment team.
The Thursday night curry buffet was impressive - eat a much as you like, There was something for everyone from kormas to vindaloos with plenty of rice, naans and popadums, pickles and relish trays to satisfy the neediest curry lover. Ask the friendly staff to recommend a drinks offer - we settled for the white grenache buy two glasses and get the rest of the bottle free. Will certainly return on my next visit to the area and the good news is there is different themed buffets on each night. Well done guys keep up the good work.

We stopped here on a Sunday en route to the ferry port. They serve a carvery menu on Sundays, but we fancied the food on the main menu, so ordered from this. Big mistake! It seems that the carvery customers are the main focus on a Sunday, with the food for this being regularly stocked and all the customers being well looked after. The menu was explained to us at breakneck speed, and we had to ask the waitress to repeat what she had said. We were still confused after she left. She had talked so quickly that her information was really of no benefit to us at all.

We sat in a corner like two naughty schoolchildren and had to wait forty minutes for our food. When it finally arrived, it was delicious, hot and tasty, but if you don’t have a lot of time we would recommend sticking to the carvery!

The staff were friendly when we arrived and left and when they served us, but in between just whizzed around so busily that they didn’t notice us at all. They seemed a bit inconsistent, serving some tables with their drinks whilst others customers (us included!) had to go to the bar for theirs (we didn’t mind doing this, we were just confused as to what we were expected to do).

After working extensively for many years with special needs children, I was absolutely delighted to see that there was a young man with Down Syndrome employed here. He was doing a fantastic job setting and clearing tables etc. I applaud this establishment for having the initiative to employ him in today’s economic climate. However, none of the staff were aware when this young man emerged from the kitchen at one point, very obviously upset. He was agitated and unable to function with his job for a good five minutes. I seemed to be the only person aware of this- maybe due to my experience- but it was pretty obvious, and several staff members walked past him.

On the whole this is a good, efficient restaurant with great pub grub at reasonable prices. But the staff, who are all buzzing around like bees, need to just take their time now and then to assess what is really going on- both with their customers and with their staff members.
