Attraction details
Owner description: Dover White Cliff Tours offers sight seeing tours in and around Dover. Take a novelty 40 minute boat ride around Dover's bay, on a historical wooden boat built in 1935. On the trip you will receive a commentary from the captain and any children who want to will be invited up to steer the boat. Or take a short bus ride up into Dover's Cliffs to see some amazing hidden history: St Martin's gun battery (WWII defensive structure), the Drop Redoubt (one of the biggest Napoleonic fortifications in Europe), Dover's historic town and much more; all with a running commentary. Get the chance to stand on the white cliffs and walk off into the sun.

“A different view of Dover”

A very reasonable 40 minute chug around Dover Harbour with an informative narration of the White Cliffs, Castle and other points of interest.

Children get a chance to steer the boat and get a certificate...

There is also a bus tour option, but I haven't taken that as I live locally...

“Worth every penny”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

We were planning a day-trip to Dover in order to visit the White Cliffs country and came across this website: http://www.doverwhiteclifftours.com. With some reluctance (since it is not a particularly attractive website) we decided to try them and we were not disappointed at all.

The main thing to point out is that the people are very friendly and professional and the tour "Does exactly what it says on the tin". We took the combined boat and bus tour for £15 pp and we enjoyed an approx 40 mins boat trip inside the Dover harbour with the captain's commentary on the history of the city and of various locations we could spot from the "Souther Queen" plus a short minibus tour on the Western heights, the White Cliffs and the war time tunnels. We were given the option to be dropped at the Dover Castle and be picked up approx 2 hours later.

The timings were 'spot on' and the information we got from captain Richard whetted our appetite for a further visit to Dover in the near future.

“Great service and tour”
Reviewed 27 July 2012

My wife and I visited Dover recently and we bought our tickets after coming across a kiosk on the promenade. We then walked over to the nearby marina where the 'Southern Queen' is based but we arrived early for the 2pm tour so we enjoyed a cup of tea and chat with Richard and his wife who apparently had the day off. Both are very friendly and they are very knowledgeable about Dover and it's history as both are locals.

No other passengers had arrived by 2pm so my wife and I enjoyed the 40 minute tour to ourselves. The skipper provided a running commentary during the cruise and a tape of Vera Lynn singing wartime songs was playing in the background. The boat was furnished with several pairs of binoculars which was a thoughtful touch. My only criticism is that the boat doesn't actually leave Dover Harbour as suggested by the name of the tour. I assumed the tour would visit the White Cliffs to the east of Dover but the boat stays within the confines of the breakwaters so the tour could be more accurately described as the 'Dover Harbour Tour'.

We thoroughly enjoyed our boat trip which was on a sunny Monday in mid-July so we were lucky to have the boat to ourselves. When it became apparent there were no more passengers we told Richard we would understand if he cancelled the trip but he wouldn't hear of that and the boat left at 2pm as scheduled. All credit to Richard for the good service as he couldn't have made much money from the two of us. It was also nice to be aboard the 'Southern Queen' as she is one of the 'Little Ships' that went across the Channel to rescue so many servicemen from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. As we cruised around the peaceful harbour I wondered how many men she lifted off the beaches under fire all those years ago.

I would recommend this harbour tour to anyone visiting Dover. I believe the 'Southern Queen' is the only pleasure boat operating such a tour in Dover at the moment. The owners are very friendly and the tea is good too!

“Excellent tour”
Reviewed 8 July 2012

We booked this tour online at the Dover Tours website and had personal correspondence with the owner, Richard who was to pick us up at our hotel in Canterbury. Richard picked us up on time in his comfortable van and took us to Deal and Sandwich and then on his boat tour of the Dover Harbor. He is also the boat captain. After the boat tour, he dropped us off at the Dover Castle and then waited for us while we toured the castle. After our castle tour, he drove us around the countryside of Dover and also took us to an outlook over the Paris tunnel train. As we drove around, he gave us a lot of local information and we found him to be congenial and very helpful. We were taking a cruse out of Dover so this was a great way to see the area. The only suggestion I would have to make this a better tour would be a speaker in the van as those in the back were unable to hear what the driver was saying.

“Disappointing tour”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

We were on a small group tour off a cruise ship. We were supposed to be on two small vans but instead were put on one large van-group of 24. Our "guide" was Tim. He gave all of us the impression that he would rather be elsewhere. When we asked if he would accompany us into Leeds Castle, he said, "There's someone in every room, ask them whatever you want." The microphone on the bus didn't work and Tim did not wish to raise his voice. Consequently, we rode in silence from the ship to the Canterbury Cathedral then to Leeds Castle. and then to our boat tour on the Southern Queen. When we disembarked from the boat tour, Tim was nowhere in sight and our bus driver checked that he had all of us and took us back to the ship. We were supposed to stop at the RAF Memorial with Spitfire and Hurrican aircraft on display. We didnt do this and when we asked Tim why not, he replied, oh that wasn't the itinerary for this coach. That was on the other coach. A man named Richard was the contact person and I hope he reads this review. This was the only tour during a 27day cruise that didn't deliver. I do not recommend this company.
