This town is steeped in history more than any other locals know it. But anyone passing through would have no idea

“Good Museum, Excellent Staff”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

This is a medium sized museum with lots of information and engaging exhibits. The entrance fee is very reasonable and the staff go out of their way to help.

“A must see”
Reviewed 19 July 2013

In the centre of town this is a brilliant small museum. The centrepiece has to be the three and a half thousand year old boat - yes 1500BC amazing to think that well before the Romans we had civilization and trade with the continent! The boat was discovered whilst excavating an underpass close to the museum and it has been preserved and housed in a controlled glass case, there is also a reconstruction using the same methods. Just mindblowing.

“Splendid local museum”
Reviewed 17 June 2013

We spent the afternoon admiring the displays on Roman history and particularly enjoyed the wealth of information on Operation Dynamo. This was beneficial in expanding our understanding of what we had seen in the secret tunnels under Dover Castle where the plan was formulated.

“Fantastic!!! Can't believe I haven't visited sooner !!!”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

This surely is a GEM hidden in Dover. Don't live far and have never been before so imagine my surprise at this amazing place.

Took my two children ( 12 & 8 ) & as half term they also had activities for the children to colour or make a collage on printed pictures of romans ect. Great for kids, well organized, helpful & friendly staff & lots of craft bits to keep the kids happy.

The museum itself is very informative, interesting & most important fun for the kids with interactive things for them to join in and do.

My 8 yr old even found white lab coats to put on while looking at the microscopes at insects!!!

Loved the life size stuffed polar bear & front half of a lion & the models showing Dover through the years and how its changed, really interesting. Of course the boat is amazing to see in its huge glass case.

The kids loved creating electricity on the interactive models & was quiet so they had time & room to play with everything without being rushed.

We went on a free family day which are listed on the web site but would happily pay the entrance fee as well worth it & we spent a good hour looking & trying things out.

Wish we could have seen the film telling the story of how the Bronze age boat was found but wasn't playing on the day we visted however just gives us an excuse to return !!!

A real must if you are visting Dover with or without kids.

Hello, Firstly, thank you so much for your fantastic words and for taking the time to review. We really take pride in providing an excellent service and also we take great pride in our museum and exhibits. We are so thrilled you had such a great visit! I'm sorry about the Bronze Age Boat film - sadly it does occassionally stop working and we try to keep an eye on it throughout the day. We would however love to see you again soon for a visit (and we'll make sure the film is behaving itself this time)!! Please always feel free to ask a member of staff to assist if it isn't. If you are on Facebook and/or Twitter, this is something to keep track of for Family Days as we have approximately one per month. Twitter: @DoverMuseum Facebook: Dover Tourism. We very much looking forward to seeing you all again soon!
