“140 feet high uniqueness!”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

I'm sure you won't find a staircase like this - anywhere. It really amazes me how imaginative and resourceful people were 200 years ago. Check out WHPS for next opening - it's worthwhile!

“Distinct lack of care”
Reviewed 23 July 2013

For such a well known local monument, it seems incredibly undervalued and under preserved. Other than two plaques outside there is little information about the history of the Grand Shaft. The surrounding area is covered with litter and graffiti and a breeding ground for many of Dover's drug addicts. The place is understaffed, every time I have made the long walk over the Western Heights to visit it I have found it open once. If it were better preserved it would be worth it a lot more, but typical of Dover, the council does not seem to care at all. A disappointment, to say the least, due to a distinct lack of care. Nothing more than a monument to the failings of this town.

“One of Dover's many hidden gems”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

Fantastic place to visit, loved in Dover all y life and only been up and down it three times. It's so fascinating and anywhere else would be a icy bigger deal. Dovers western height is a maze of wasted opportunities. The gun emplacements, the Templars church ruins the drop redoubt the walks the views and on and on. Advertise use it and go and visit its well worth it. Thy have open days at the heights please go.

“Unique piece of history.”
Reviewed 20 March 2013

This attraction is opened to the public on certain weekends by a friendly group of volunteers so check before visiting. The walk up the staircases takes only a few minutes (no charge), but it is an ideal way to access the extensive Western Heights area which would take days to explore fully.

“Why is the picture so wrong?”
Reviewed 27 November 2012

This is an amazing piece of our history. Why is it not open more often? Why does nobody promote it more? It's incredible!
