“A laid-back gem in a great location”

Books, vinyl records and an open fire by which to enjoy a nightcap from the honesty bar, this place draws me back every year as Ramsgate gets its act together. Rooms aren't the biggest but they are comfortable and at the front of the hotel offer great views over the harbour and out to sea. First class breakfast and nice people.

We stayed for one night over the Easter bank holiday. Seemed small & friendly and I liked the owner's approach to client feedback on Tripadvisor etc. We didn't expect to be blown away, but did expect the service to be better as I'd read all about the charmingness and warmth of the place. On arrival there was no sign of the owner and we actually only encountered one staff member during our stay. Unfortunately he had no personality and we didn't receive much of a welcome. There was no immediate offer of help lugging our baggage, child and dog bed etc up to the 3rd floor (he did offer after much struggling on my part!). Room was small, esp with child, pram, dog etc (!) and difficult to access, but comfortable with expected facilities.

Breakfast v disappointing - we were expecting a treat., having read about the finest breakfasts! Its really just a fry up... a nice grilled breakfast would have been far nicer!(best yet is Hoste Arms in Burnham Market). Shame as this place really did seem to be unique. I suspect it is much better when the owner is around.

On the plus side, the lounge rooms are lovely and it is a bit like staying in someone's house. We enjoyed the walk down the hill to the harbour.

All in all, it was a v sweet place, just didn't meet the expectations that the website builds up...

Room was too small and not as described over the phone and had problems finding the manager to complain. This took several hours. Breakfast on the Sunday was cold and had to wait 20 minutes for them to provide a replacement.
When the room was changed to a slightly larger one, the bathroom was tiny and had no towel rail. The downstairs lounges are pleasant in the evenings with the open fires but the rooms are definitely over-priced for the facilities they provide.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the hotel. It is run with care and imagination, with many nice small touches that make for a memorable stay (e.g. the selection of LPs, the Sunday papers, the cheese board left out, the honesty bar).

We would definitely consider staying again.

The only gripes were:
- the room was on the top floor and as I suppose you would expect in a house of the type a fair haul up narrow stairs. Perhaps not ideal for the less sprightly.
- a dog, with which we were not too enamoured. I'm not sure if it belonged to management or guests but either way I think it is unwise to have a dog on the premises that is easily disturbed and barks during the night, waking guests.
- a slighlty chaotic breakfast. I'm not sure the breakfast room has enough places for the number of guests accommodated by the hotel; we had to wait about 40 minutes to sit down. In mitigation I think this was because everyone had arrived towards the end of breakfast due to the clocks going forward.

We were searching on the internet to find somewhere congenial to stay in the area, and found all the great reviews here. Delighted to report that they are all well-deserved - we were not disappointed in the slightest. Loved all the artwork on the walls, the cosy atmosphere and fantastic views. Lovely bed, too.

A wonderfully quirky hotel - superb views over harbour. The room was very clean - it was the little touches that made it a fab stay- a hot water bottle in the bed on one of the coldest nights of the year and complimentary cheese and biscuits during late evening .The honesty bar was fully stocked and very reasonable.
We were the only 2 people there but we did not feel short changed and the breakfast that was laid out just for the 2 of us was fantastic from fresh fuit to full English.
Real fires, good food, comfy beds and good hosts - what more can you ask.!

  • Liked — the quirkiness
  • Disliked — the room was a little cramped for a long stay

Wanted to stay for a weekend break from the kids - to have a nice quiet meal and an uninterrupted nights sleep.
Hotel was everything we expected and more. Helpful staff - the little touches were great as well - after we came back from dinner we spent the evening in front of a log fire playing cards etc and listening to elvis and enjoying the cheese and wine.- maybe not everyione's cup of tea but was just what we needed.
A nice lie in the next day and an excellent breakfast - honey still on the honeycombe, and no rush to do anything.
We hope tor return here again.
