Royal Harbour Hotel

Reviewed 21 July 2009

We spent a week at The Royal Harbour Hotel and without doubt it is the best place we have stayed anywhere in the world. The breakfast was amazing and I simply cannot think of anything that they could add to the menu. Nothing is to much trouble for the staff who treated us like family, they are all kind and friendly and very thoughtful; I was ill one day during our trip and was offered a tray in my room and provided with bottled water and crackers. The hotel is in a lovely location overlooking the harbour and we watched the fireworks going off in Dunkirk on Bastille day, from the steps outside. The weather on this part of the coast is definitely reminiscent of the far side of the channel rather than this. The interior of the Royal is cosy and comfortable with a wealth of interesting things to look at and do including its own cinema. Every evening there is a complementary tray of cheese and biscuits supplied and something that I have never seen before; an `honesty bar` you help yourself and write down what you have had. the candle lit sitting room is a beautiful setting to have your supper with a night cap at the end of the day. Outside there is a peaceful herb garden filled with a wonderful aroma and sunshine all day. The rooms are clean and comfortable with feather pillows and bottled water on the bedside table. We came away feeling that we had been thoroughly spoiled for the whole week and cant wait to go back. All this at a very reasonable, affordable rate. I really would not have believed that somewhere as good as this could possibly still be around.

Booked for one night, last minute, through the hotels own website. Arrived to find our room had been "double booked" due to some sort of computer error and all they had left was a very disappointing small double. We decide to go elsewhere. They did try and call before we arrived to their credit and offered us tea while we searched the web for somewhere else. In short check before you travel if you have booked with them online as the systems clearly are not working well so make sure you have a room!

This hotel is a real gem.
There are so many nice touches such as the paintings, the honesty bar, the pretty candles, the late breakfast and of course the friendly and helpful staff.
I will definately recommend to freinds.

We stayed here for my husband's birthday weekend and were really pleased with our find. The room was small and overlooking the harbour - not too small though and really very cosy. Common areas were extremely homely, staff were friendly and helpful and the place was oozing with character. This all made for a special stay.

Found it on the internet where it has a decent reputation.
We were on the top floor in a family room, a fair old climb but as it happens our 5 year old granddaughter thought it was a great adventure, Family room had substantial bunk beds for the 'weans'. Excellent breakfasts and interesting public rooms, nice log fire and value for money honesty bar with complementary cheese and biscuits.
Staff friendly and helpful, not far from a child friendly beach and very handy for the ferry to Holland.
Plenty of attractions within an hours drive, and the local roads though busy are not as congested as elsewhere in the south east, you do need a car.
Plenty of eateries close by. Parking not so good. Only one place available to guests in the car park at the rear. You have to take your chances in the street.

Books, vinyl records and an open fire by which to enjoy a nightcap from the honesty bar, this place draws me back every year as Ramsgate gets its act together. Rooms aren't the biggest but they are comfortable and at the front of the hotel offer great views over the harbour and out to sea. First class breakfast and nice people.
