“What a wonderful attraction”
Reviewed 13 October 2013

Never knew what a beautiful house this was. Built by Pugin this. Was his home. The gothic architecture was magnificent. The staff of the Landmark trust, who run the grange, was most helpful and we were shown round a magnificent house. Recently shown on a time team special when they were restoring it.

“Utterly fascinating”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

The Grange (open for visits on Wednesdays) is where Pugin the designer used to live. It is therefore rammed with his designs. Either you love it or you hate it - or you might just be interested in this iconic designer. Incidentally, this is free of charge but not to donate is churlish and mean, so one really has to do so.

Our tour was expertly presented by Catriona (whose surname I missed). She brought the whole place and Pugin's designs to life. At the end, I knew a huge amount more about the man and his work. I have long been a huge huge fan of Pugin's designs and remain so. However, a visit to the Grange allowed me to get to know him a little and it isn't very pretty. He emerges as a self-centred obsessive-compulsive megalomaniac who worked himself into an early grave.

No-one can take away from those designs, though and The Grange is a superb curation of these, while being an occupied, lived in house.

Top marks.

“Pugin's Home”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

Wonderful, fascinating house designed and lived in by Augustus Pugin. It is owned by the Landmark Trust and can be rented as holiday accomodation. If in Ramsgate do arrange a visit. It is by appointment only on Wednesday afternoons and occasionally has open days. Truly worth a visit.

“Gem of a house”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

There are few opportunities in the year to visit Pugin's house, but when it is open, for anyone who is a fan of his style of decoration and architecture, it is a treat not to be missed. You will marvel at the loving detail he included to make this house truly personal to reflect his taste and values. The restoration has been painstakingly carried out and since The Grange is available as a holiday home through the Landmark Trust for most of the year, it continues to feel 'lived in'.
