Salomons Estate
Reviewed 10 August 2014

We had 3 rooms for one night on the ground floor of the Broomhill section. This is a stundent dorm for the university refurbished.

The rooms are nice inside. Comfortable bed, very clean, tea, coffee, water and biscuits and a nice bathroom. Unfortunately you have one big window with a tiny opening which is directly on a path from the top to the bottom. We had no privacy in our room. People walking past had full view of our bed. It was quite a warm day, not hot though. The room was like a sauna! You had to have the blind fully up to have a small breeze in the room, or close it for privacy and sweat! If next door is talking you will hear every word of their conversation too! If you did want to stay I would request rooms on the 2nd floor if you like privacy. I personally would recommend staying elsewhere.....

The house and grounds were really nice and the food we ordered for lunch was nice although the menu was lacking in variety.

Room Tip: Rooms in the 200's (second floor). Avoid the ground floor if you like privacy.

Stayed here for one night after attending a wedding celebration - interesting house with lovely grounds - room in separate building was okay - comfortable enough and at £90 with breakfast for the two of us was good value. We look forward to finding out more about the hotel to be built here within the next year or so.

We stayed at Salomons for one night. The guest rooms are situated away from the main building but this really wasn't a problem although I can imagine if you're staying when it's raining, walking up and down the hill to and from the main building for breakfast could be a pain! On the evening we stayed, it didn't rain but it was very hot.

We stayed in room 111 in Broomhill (I think that's what it was called) and this is a corner room on the ground floor. This meant two large windows in the room - great for light but as neither window had curtains only a roll type blind, every time someone walked past the room (which is on the main drag to the main building which means a lot of people walked past) they have a very clear view into your room. Put the blinds down and you're in a dark room. The other problem was that the windows only had one small window open at the top of each window. Therefore, when the blinds were down, there was no breeze getting into the room. Stifling when you're in a mini heatwave!

The rooms themselves have been recently refurbished and are really good value for money. Everything you need - kettle, tea/coffee making facilities, safe, tv etc etc. Great walk in shower in the bathroom but the hot water was a bit touchy. Nothing too problematic though.

My friend and I are both vegans and this didn't prove problematic at breakfast time as this is served buffet style. We pointed out to the waiter that we were vegans and asked if they had any soya milk - they brought us a jug of it. Thumbs up from us for that. There was plenty of food choice at breakfast and lots of it. However, the 'hot' food we chose was luke warm, verging on cold. We put this down to it being the last bits left in the trays on the hot counter.

The grounds at Salomons are lovely. There's a tiered formal garden, woodlands and a small lake. We were lucky enough to see the kingfisher the day we stayed. Whilst part of the grounds are lovely whoever took the decision to put metal scaffolding style steps down two parts of the tiered garden needs to be reprimanded. They are hideous and totally out of keeping with the rest of the grounds!

When we checked out we were told that in about 18 months time there would be a new hotel built in the car park and that they would be promoting something called Santa Land or similar. Sounds like they're trying to become Disney'esque which would be a real shame and would definitely put me off ever staying here again. If it remained the same as it is now, then I would come again...only I wouldn't stay in the same room!

Room Tip: Don't take room 111 if you like a bit of privacy!

I stayed one night with my elderly aunt who does not walk well. The hotel staff responded to my emails promptly and reserved a room for us on the first floor, which is accessed directly from the disabled car parking. We found the room was very clean and had everything we needed. I was well aware beforehand that the rooms are in a converted hall of residence so was not disappointed not to be in the main building.

My aunt was delighted with the beautiful surroundings and the history of the place. We sat on the terrace and enjoyed the view before ordering our evening meal, which was well cooked and presented, and not particularly expensive.

Breakfast was served in the conservatory - again, we were able to enjoy a beautiful view with our meal. We do not eat cooked breakfast, and found the fruit/cereal/croissant option more than sufficient.

Our only complaint was that our bedroom window only opened a little way and the room was stiflingly hot (this was in a heatwave). I rang reception for a fan, but they said all 10 fans were already out. I suggested next morning that they could buy some fans!

This hotel is clean, comfortable and very good value for money - while also being out of the ordinary run of budget hotels. Go now before they rebuild as a Spa hotel and put the prices up.

Room Tip: Speak to or email reception if you have special needs and need to be near the disabled parking.

Thank you very much for your review. We love hearing that our customers have enjoyed their stay with us, and that we have provided them will an enjoyable and sufficient service. We apologise for the heat within your room, we will look into getting some more fans. You picked a lovely time to visit in a heatwave, our estate grounds & lakes look beautiful with the sun shining down on them and sitting on our terrace over looking our grounds on a warm summers evening with good food and beverage is magical.

We had booked a room for 10am for me and my bridal party to get ready, on arrival at 12pm due to other delays the bridesmaid were told check in isn't until 2pm, however after discussion they offered 2 twin rooms for us to get ready in and after I spoke to the lady on reception we were offered a 25% refund. However this gesture, doesn't really cover the stress of my bridesmaid calling me to say my room isn't ready!

The Salomons Estate is situated in a very nice environement, just out of the city centre of Royal Tunbridge Wells. We had booked this hotel mainly based on the pictures on the website booking.com, but when we arrived we were a bit dissapointed. Because our room wasn't in the main building, which you can see on almost all the pictures, but in a plain white building on the estate. The room was nice enough and recently renovated, so there was nothing wrong with that. The gym was situated in the old library and is very recent and modern. that's a plus for the active visitors. Breakfast was ok, although there wasn't a lot of variation to me. The estate itself is very green and quite peacefull. The staff was very friendly and helped you whenever you had a question. Maybe we will go back, but we'll try to conquer a room in the main building.

The hotel is set in lovely surroundings, the building is beautiful and the rooms are in modern buildings in the grounds. These rooms have been recently refurbished and are very generic. The staff were very good.
Unfortunately the evening meal was ruined by a disaster in the organisation of a noisy (understandably) summer ball for the local hospital and a group of diners that wanted a quite dinner. The ball was set up on the terrace with the band, the pop corn machine and the candy floss set up just outside the restaurant this meant that it was noisy and smelly in the restaurant. The ball goers walked through the restaurant to get to the terrace and the bar and the toilets. This meant that the restaurant was noisy and busy. The restaurant staff were dealing with the ball as well as the diners. This meant that service was very slow. The staff did the best they could in a trying situation. And Frank the manager was a star and acted decisively to smooth the ruffled feathers of the diners.
This was an unacceptable breakdown in the organisation of two events... It would have been easy to have kept the two separate with another bar set up for the ball.
Although this is a negative review I want only to criticise the organisation not the staff on the ground who did their best in a very trying situation. BUT this is a hotel (I assume) that deals on a daily basis with events and it must be able to get it right.
The food was ok but in a place like this could have been a bit more imaginative.
