Very comfortable inn with great restaurant. Staff couldn't have been nicer. All located in one of the prettiest places in England. The church bells ring on Sunday morning. Great ales. Chapel down not far

What a fantastic warm welcome we received. We booked it on the tuesday and arrived for a two night stay on the Friday. We travelled on our motorbikes and were made to feel very welcome, we spent two days travelling around Kent on our bikes and the family went out of thier way to advise us where to go etc. The food was amazing also, and very resonable. We are really looking forwards to a return visit. The Inn is seeped in history and rather than modernising it and loosing all it character the family are taking it back to how it should be, wonderful open fires and all the character you expect from a property this old right in the heart of Englands garden county.

We stayed at the Chequers for 4 nights this May and a number of friends and family also stayed there for the weekend of the christening of our daughter in Smarden Church. The Chequers put on a special lunch for 48 people on the day of the Christening. This all required much organising in avance, and I was in constant email contact with Melissa who was very accommodating. The setting was atmospheric, the food extremely good and all was run very professionally. The staff were also very friendly and personable. The Chequers helped make our special weekend very special. I would recommend The Chequers as a restaurant, a place for functions and as a B&B (the breakfasts are also very good!) Just one small suggestion: perhaps you could put up thicker curtains in Room 6!

We chose The Chequers because whilst we know the area well, we had not stayed there before. We chose a ground floor garden room. It was pleasantly furnished and the en suite shower was good, bright and modern. The floor of the lobby to the room was dirty with muddy footprints--easily cleaned, but left undone and external paintwork was peeling. The bedroom door lock, when it worked, was not a security lock. The room looked onto the car park and odds and ends outside needed tidying, and the two sets of French doors would be nice in summer, but denied all privacy and had to be fully curtained, removing the natural light. A Venetian blind solution, perhaps. The restaurant and public bar are divorced from each other, and that meant the pub and restaurant didn't noticeably mix. The young and cheerful staff coped well, but the restaurant was quiet on both a Friday and Saturday night and the food deserved more custom as it was some of the best we have had in what is essentially a family run village pub. So, not quite the gloss of a gastro inn overall and in a recession all we can say is that with a little more investment and get the detail right then custom will surely follow--we will stay there again and, if not, we will certainly eat there again and hope that this is still a work in progress so that next time the garden rooms at least will fulfill what appears to be there presently slightly neglected potential. We wish The Chequers well.

We only stayed one night but wished it had been more. This 14th century inn is has managed to retain all the charm of a quaint old building but with all the facilities and comforts needed for an enjoyable stay.

The welcome is friendly and nothing is too much trouble, and though we didn't have dinner as we awere visiting family, the menu is imaginative and very tempting so next time we'll eat in!

The cooked breakfast is exceptional, the best we've had in years. There is a wide choice and everythibg is freshly cooked to order.

Room Tip: Altough on the main street of the village there is very little traffic, so even in the front room we...

I would highly recommend The Chequers. A beautiful old building right in the centre of the village.

We had Barn 1 room. This is, I believe, a new conversion. The room had a medieval theme and was plush and very comfortable with high quality oak carpentry - very attractive. Lovely modern bathroom too. Bed very comfortable with good quality linen.

Breakfast was fantastic with fresh fruit (including guava and strawberries) and very good choice of cereals and yoghurt. This was followed by a full English breakfast with very generous portions. The landlady was really lovely - very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back.
