“Excellent small gallery”
Reviewed 7 September 2011

We visited recently to see the visiting Hockney exhibition. Ferens is an great municipal gallery with a broad spectrum of work on display, from old masters to contemporary works. There is a great room dedicated to Hull over the centuries which the teenager we had dragged along found interesting and engaging. I have heard good reports about the cafe, but it was closed when we visited on a Sunday afternoon. It is a place you can spend an hour or more in. Pleasant, well stocked shop.

“It's free and worth a visit”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

The Feren's is a free, council owned gallery with a good mix of old master style paintings and more modern works, with changing exhibitions in a couple of the rooms. If you are visiting Hull, it is worth popping in for a look around. The cafe is supposed to be good, but I haven't used it myself.

“This is a fabulous asset to Kingston on HULL”
Reviewed 21 July 2011

Do go to visit this Gallery. Opens at 10.00. We saw the David Hockney in the company of about 20 others...... and all at no charge. Wonderful wonderful painting and not just its size........how fantastic it is being shown until September at this lovely modest Gallery.
But the whole collection at the Gallery is worth more than an hour of your time.
The whole city centre is a revalation...... congratulations to Hull City Council. The whole area is great and is obviously well looked after.
Wish more businesses would relocate to your city.

“Hard to believe I'm writing the first review ...”
Reviewed 22 March 2011

Amanda and I visited the Feren's Art Gallery in Hull to see one picture, possibly, two: Gerald Leslie Brockhurst's 'By the Hills' (1939) and Meredith Frampton's 'Patience' (1937).

We saw the Brockhurst (disappointingly on the stairwell) and then the Frampton, upstairs. Then, amazed, we saw around fifty other brilliant paintings, hung superbly, lit perfectly. The place is jaw-dropping. Every time you have a moment its surpassed by another. There are something like twelve rooms, chronologically ordered with paintings from the 15th Century to the present day, sculpture too. Every room has something that makes you stand and stare.

The gallery isn't large enough to present the whole collection. It would need to ten times bigger. The book of the collection extends over four volumes.

There are so many pictures here that I could list but it would be a very long list. If you like art go visit. Its one of the most surprisingly gallery visits I've made, on a par with the Lady Lever, possibly surpassing it, given the breadth of its collection.
