The Royal Hotel Hull
Reviewed 11 August 2014

this is an old station hotel and has a pleasant old fashioned feel. helpful staff and pleasant breakfast. the bedroom however was very small. the hotel is centrally located in the middle of Hull and only a few minutes walk from the harbour front.

Rather bizarrely, this is a review of the booking system of this hotel rather than the hotel itself.

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to book a room at the negotiated rate for an event next Saturday for the last week. I have rang five times. Each time I am told that the 'events team' will ring me back. This has never occurred. Yesterday I became frustrated and asked to speak to the manager. 'yes of course' was the response and I was put straight through to an answering machine.

I was assured that I'd be called back by the manager that day and of course I've heard nothing.

I mentioned that one good thing to do to help would be to simply apologise for the inconvenience because no one ever actually says 'sorry'. The response was 'Did I do something personally to upset you?'

The staff don't appear to care, the hotel doesn't appear to want my business and quite frankly I've lost patience. Congratulations to other reviewers who have managed to against all odds secure a booking for the night.

The Royal Hotel is located next door to the Railway Station and Bus Station so access to transport is no problem. We stayed for a long weekend and had a room on the second floor, it was spotless and the beds very comfortable. The restaurant is located on the ground floor and with the station right outside gave it a lovely feeling with the announcements of train arrivals etc, quite the Brief Encounter moment. The food was excellent and the breakfast was really outstanding. Our evening meals were also very good and offered a wide choice. What really stood out was the very friendly staff, its great too be greeted with a smile. My only complaint is the air conditioning in our room was broken and from so of the comments, other rooms had the same problem.

Room Tip: Had no problem regarding the railway but a room at the front might be better.

Stayed for one night on Dinner, Bed & Breakfast as part of a National Holidays weekend break.
Checking in was easy as the electronic door key + letter were in named envelopes handed out by staffer.
Eventually found the Room 269 which was notionally on the second floor and was reached by a combination of lift and a long trek up hill and down dale following the numerous signs.
As the room backed onto the station we could hear (not too loud) the station announcements.
The room was originally, it seemed, part of a bigger room and was divided by not very good sound deadening plasterboard wall.
Room nicely set and more than adequate... until we tried to use the shower.
The shower ran cold for over 5 minutes so I called Reception; someone would attend.
Fifteen minutes later a chap and young lady arrived to check out the shower... no success.
The engineer had gone off duty, surely there should be 24/7 cover!
Shortly after we were offered Room 270, which wasn't next door but up another flight of stairs.
Room 270, bigger room and after a bit of fiddling the shower ran hot, the adjustment needs some attention as the knob is loose and only occasionally works.
A desk but no chair; room for a three piece suite, but no chair!
Dinner was a choice of each of three course, order taken professionally and delivered soon thereafter.
Breakfast was the standard buffer style, no fried eggs but scrambled egg instead, no problem.
Building would have been very smart in it's heyday, but showing general signs of lack of maintenance. Seems to be a bit of a short-cut to the station through the Foyer / Lounge.
As a Company we use Accor Worldwide, I think we get the better Rooms rather than 'budget room's given, understandably considering the rate deal, to National Holiday clients.
Pity I couldn't it seems get any point on my loyalty card as my name wasn't on the Room Invoice.
Wifi was erratic and a better more reliable wifi source was from Pumpkin on the station concourse.
Would we stay again, probably yes, but we'd book via the Loyalty/Rewards login.

Room Tip: The Rooms situated other than at the rear of the Hotel might be quieter re. train announcements.

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your comprehensive review.

I will attend to the lack of chairs in room 270, which seems quite perculiar.

Best wishes

I was on a short weekend break with National Holidays and this was the hotel that was chosen for the overnight stay. It is right above the train station- my room was literally in the train station- and is right in the city centre: the perfect location for a hotel. The hotel itself is grand and beautiful and felt all very posh; the lounge and bar area is lovely, as are the restaurant and the function rooms. Service is great in the restaurant and we were given a full, hearty, 3-course meal, and the room I stayed in ( a twin room) was spacious, clean and well laid out. However, it was a typical hotel bed - made of concrete. The other (very slight) problem was the noise of drunk people in the train station as it was a Saturday night. Other than that, no complaints and I highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in Hull. (We also had access to the train stations free wifi.)

Room Tip: Get a room on above the first floor and not at the rear of the hotel to avoid any train station nois...
