“Good shows, great staff, poor seating”
Review of Hull New Theatre

Have been to several shows recently and sat in a variety of seats, stall rows are very long and found it impossible to see all the stage, if sat in middle you have to disturb a lot of people to get to your seat. Circle seats ok but upper circle seats have not enough leg room for taller people. Staff are friendly and helpful. If you buy tickets from the theatre at the theatre you have to pay a booking fee!! Why? Some seats are getting old and are uncomfortable.

Always enjoy the performances and the staff are friendly. However it is always too hot and the seats are more uncomfortable since the refurb. Beware before booking seats online too as for example seats FF 34, 35 do not have extra leg room nor are they on an aisle as suggested by seating plan online so telephone beforehand if this is something you need. I had to stand for the second half because of this and although I filled in a comment card at the end of the night (weeks ago) requesting a response about my experience i never got one!

This is my first visit to the New Theatre since it massive revamp. What a transformation! It is splendid and now a great theatre to visit.
We have just seen a tremendous production and thoroughly enjoyed the venue as well as the play.
Hull now have a wonderful theatre for all to enjoy. Do pay it a visit.

The new bar is ridiculous. Can’t get through the door as so many people crammed in , god help us if there was a fire. Can never get a drink .After the farce last time, we now have a nice meal and drink somewhere else. The staff are so nice as always and helpful. Can’t fault them. The seats are now showing signs of wear, nothing like the original seats, these are not comfortable. What’s a shame. Good job they have brilliant shows.

Initial impression was that everything is fresh and bright, and we loved the new extension / entrance area.

Searching people's bags at the old entrance (but not the new one!) solely seemed to serve the purpose of detecting when someone has brought a drink or snack, which is then removed (to be returned after the show). That's fine - my pockets are big enough to hold a can; I won't be forced to buy overpriced drinks, least of all when there's nowhere decent to enjoy it.

The new auditorium was a complete let-down. Seats have been crammed in in any manner possible. I spent the show feeling like a sardine, shuffling around, trying to get comfortable, which was impossible. Having to sit there in pain pretty much ruins any show, no matter how good it is. On top of this, people bring their drinks from the bar into this glorified sardine tin - there's absolutely nowhere to put them, and others (as well as the furniture & fittings) will easily end up covered in spillages as a result.

The former seating wasn't perfect, but still a great deal more comfortable. There were also central aisles and more breathing space between seating blocks, all of which has disappeared.

Sadly, toilet facilities haven't really improved in quantity either. Whilst the new facilities are nice and modern, the main corridor is now blocked by queues of both ladies and gents during the interval, with other members of the audience trying to squeeze through.

Not our idea of a relaxing evening!
