Holiday Inn Express Hull City Centre
Reviewed 28 March 2009

This is a new Holiday Inn Express right next to the main station in Hull, as you would expect the rooms are large, clean and have everything you need, good TV, WiFi etc. Midweek at £69 is ok but not as cheap as other like the Ibis down the road but it's a lot better.

The opening of this hotel has undoubtedly improved the budget offering in Hull City Centre and it's superbly located just opposite the new Paragon Interchange. In terms of price (£59 per night) including breakfast it is probably comparable with the likes of Ibis, Premier Inn and Travel Lodge for what was on offer. The staff seemed pleasant, my room was very clean and well appointed with good sound insulation from the busy Ferensway. The free wi-fi was also useful and they're some good views over the city from the upper levels. On the down side - the breakfast was a bit basic and some of the stair lobbys smelt of cigarette smoke. The main entrance from Ferensway also seems fairly anonymous - the signs aren't that clear and I'm surprised they haven't tried to make more of it.

Stayed here for one night. Room was ample. Free wi-fi was great. Room was very clean, warm, well lit and bed was comfortable. Television did not work properly. Breakfast taken on 1st floor (where reception was) was fine - only continental. Access is split - from Car Park direct into Reception, from street you must use the lift. Lift controlled by room key card.

Having never stayed in any budget hotels before we really wasn't sure what to expect. I had read extensive reviews on here about the Holiday Inn Express in Hull and decided that it sounded like the perfect hotel location and price for a surprise birthday weekend for my wife.

Location wise is perfect, its right next to the shopping centre and railway station and less than a minute from town centre by foot.

We had arrived early so went to reception to ask if we could leave our bags there for the day and check in later. This request was met with a friendly smile and a "no problem at all" from the lovely receptionist, something we found to be very much part of the norm at this hotel.

Returning after a busy day shopping in Hull, we was checked in quickly and easily with no fuss. We was told that the lift only goes to the reception floor from the ground without using our hotel door key and that we needed to insert it to go to level 2 where our room was located for added guest security. Door key also controls access to the room and electricity.

The room was spacious and bright and had everything you could need and a little more. Nice touches like dove shower gel and handwash contained in dispensers was well received as was the provision of extra pillows. There was even a note in the bathroom stating that had we forgot anything like toothpaste etc reception would gladly provide some for us.

The bed was soft, maybe a little too soft, but had clean white sheets and duvet. Another nice feature was the provision of extra pillows should we need them and that made the stay all the better.

The room was very modern and theres even a rather funky blue neon light in the bathroom area. Bathroom was bright, clean, spacious and of a high standard. The TV was an LCD that had quite a few freeview channels on its lineup.

Noise was surprising at a minimum considering the main road its located on and we had a fairly restful nights sleep.

The good thing about this hotel and Holiday Inn in general is that checkout is up to 12pm with breakfast being served up to 11.30am. This made certain that we could lay in without being disturbed (but do make sure you put the do not disturb sign out or the cleaners may try entering around 10.30am).

Food was continental breakfast affair and had plenty to choose from. There was croissants, 7 or 8 kinds of cereal, cheeses, yoghurt's aplenty,a variety of diced fruit and white or brown bread for toasting. There was plenty of coffee, tea, and juices to go around from the dispenser machine (all included free in the price).. Food is an "eat all you want" buffet and was regularly topped up. There was little to no queue for food either, always a plus.

The hotel staff were extremely friendly and happy to advise us on a variety of locations we wished to visit. They even ordered us a taxi to the deep and gave permission for my wife to take a pen home. They also let us keep our bags in the hotel secure room after checkout so we could spend the maximum time left sightseeing and asked how our day had been on our return.

All in all the experience was incredibly rewarding. I asked the reception if ALL Holiday Inns were similar and he assured me they were, although this one was a little more newer than some.

We will now certainly consider trying others around the area and at £69 per room for a night you really couldn't find better.

Certainly recommended.

I visted the Holiday Inn Express in Hull this weekend and I was not dissapointed one bit. The hotel room was smart, modern, clean and spacious, with great views of the city from the upper floors. Staff were helpful and courteous. Our tarriff was truly outstanding too at £49 per room, with continental breakfast included. The hotels location was superb, right next to the train station and main shopping areas. A big thumbs up!

This hotel was a real surprise. It is very centrally located next to the station and is joined to a new retail development. Finding the parking was a little challenging at the end of a long day, though my initial fears of having to parking in a nearby multi storey car park were not founded. Level 2 of the car led straight into the hotel reception. Parking was subsidised to £2.50 for 24hrs -the reception staff add this to your bill and validate the ticket. The car park is also brand new.

This is the newest Express by Holiday Inn I have stayed in having only opened some four months ago. The checkin staff were friendly and efficient. The reception was modern and adjoined the bar; there were large plasma screens showing that nights football in that area,

The only negative for me was the dysfunctional lifts. I had a room on the 3rd floor, my colleague the 6th. We had several long waits for the lifts -they seemed to go up and down in pairs. The hotel is extremely secure with a room card being required to swipe through to the lifts and then to activate the lift itself.

My allocated room was excellent considering the normal brand standard. I had a flat panel screen and a large double bed. The decor was fresh & modern. Overall it was excellent. The view was slightly dodgy, if I was being picky, I over looked the car-park. However my colleague did have a nice view over Hull -ask for a room at the front of the hotel.

The bar was also good with a slightly european feel to it. Breakfast was the usual continental offering associated with this chain. It was okay, but the breakfast area (counter) was a little on the small side. At peak times you might haven an issue.

Overall we had a good stay. This hotel is considerably cheaper than the full service Holiday Inn at the Marina. I have stayed there in the past -it isn't worth the premium they charge for staying there. We paid £79 for the Express which was the Internet rate the Holiday Inn was quoting £135 for a standard room and £165 for an Executive - this is a rip-off. I believe both rates were without breakfast.
