Helvellyn is a fantastic hike which can be stretched out over a day for maximum enjoyment.

The best approach is to breakfast in Glenridding and then park your motor vehicle approximately 2 miles up the trail in the local YMCA.

From there it is a moderate walk (some short steep sections) on well marked paths to the Red Tarn lake. Red Tarn nestles at the foot of Helvellyn and is a fantastic spot for a breather and to take on fluids. On either side of the lake are two ridgelines which act as "arms" guiding you to the summit.

On the left is Striding Edge and on the right is Swirral. It is commonplace to ascend one to the summit and then descend via the other. I recommend going up via Striding Edge as it is considerably longer than Swirral from the start point "Hole in the Wall".

All in all, this hike is a pleasant day out with some excellent views and the more adventurous can scramble along the outer ridge of Striding Edge which overlooks a 200 metre drop rather than sticking to the relatively safe trail path.

With a little bit of common sense it is quite suitable to take dogs on this hike also, my German Shepherd had no problems.

Once at the summit there is a multitude of routes back to Glenridding - exploring is half the fun. A great day out.

My partner and I walked up on a sunny, warm and settled september day. We started at patterdale and climed to the top via striding edge. Amazing and exhilerating in one. Adrenaline and a little anxiety provoking at times while traversing the knife edge ridge however it was well worth the views from the top and the satisfaction from the climb. I would do it again without doubt, (pehaps not for a windy day).
It took us 5 hours to complete our walk, we came down the long rout avoiding swirrel edge and ending up walking back past helvellyn youth hostel and copper mines. It was a wonderful day for mushroom spotting also.

Helvellyn is one of the most rewarding hill walks in the Lake District, if not the whole of England. Personally, I preferred to ascend up Swirral Edge and descend by Striding Edge (the former is much steeper coming down!), but whatever way you get there, the views from the flat summit are just fantastic.

A trip up Helvellyn is simply awesome. The views from the top across to Ullswater are stunning. Go up Striding Edge and come down Swirral Edge - well worth the effort. Good photos and suggested routes at [--]
