We tried Matthew's on the recommendation of a couple of people we met. Unfortunately we were disappointed with both the surroundings which were dull and dated, and the food which for the price was very average.

We were staying in nearby Windermere for a few days but could not make up our minds on a restaurant within walking distance of our hotel, so we went for this well-reviewed bistro in Ambleside; we were not disappointed.

We arrived at 8pm on a busy Tuesday evening. A friendly waiter cheerfully bounded over to us and showed us to our pre-booked table. Within a very short time, another cheerful soul took our order. We ordered a bottle of the house chardonnay, soup (leek and potato), chicken stroganoff and a vegetarian moussaka.

The bistro has a very warm, cosy and relaxed feel about it, and is well decorated.

The soup (served with fresh, warm and crispy bread) was delicious: thick, creamy and packed full of flavour. The stroganoff and moussaka were an absolute delight, too. The portions were a good size, and we left feeling comfortably full.

We shall definitely return on our next trip to Lakeland.

We regularly visit Ambleside but hadn't been here before so wanted to give it a try having read some pretty good reviews on TripAdvisor. It was mid week but it was full so always a good sign - we had booked a table earlier that day. We managed two courses - no chance of a dessert as the portions were really good. Starters & mains for both of us were really lovely. I had the lamb which was as good as the reviews said. My partner had a lovely fish course. Our only criticism was we ordered a nice bottle of wine - £20+ - but it wasn't good at all. It tasted like a cheaper wine. Maybe we will taste before we buy next time. Notwithstanding the dodgy drink we'll certainly go back for the food!

The interior of this restaurant needs an upgrade. It's too sober and not cosy. The meals are reasonable, so is the price. The staff is friendly but could be more professional.
