We found the bistro on our first night in Ambleside and just walked in. The staff were very helpful, putting two tables together to accopmodate the six of us. The place was very busy and the staff worked extremely hard to ensure that no-one was kept waiting for food or drink. We only had starters and main courses as the portions were large and very satisfying. An excellent restaurant in a good location in the centre of Ambleside which you could recommend to anyone.

After just having a weekend away in the lakes we thought we should try somewhere new to eat and after searching Tripadvisor we settled on Matthew's. On our arrival the bistro was quite full and we got seated quickly. Once in our seats we waited for the one waitress to finish clearing up,serving and taking other orders before ten minutes later managing to order drinks with the manager, along with the rest of our food. When the food came it was just pub grub, now i appreciate this has its place but not when this bistro marks up at least 20% on pub prices! i could have put the oven chips in if it would bring our bill down!. We have previously eaten at other establishments in Ambleside and this is easily the worst, i would seriously consider going to Greggs before re-visiting this "bistro"!.

Had a three day break in Ambleside and were recommended to this place by the proprietor of the Ambleside Lodge and we were not disappointed. We took a chance to visit without booking and noted that even on a Wednesday evening we only just got a table. We were greeted by Charlotte who found us a table. Lighting and decor just right as was the menu with a varied choice of starters, mains and sweets and a wine list keenly priced.
I had the lamb shoulder and my wife had the chicken both served with fresh vegetables washed down with a bottle of Pinot Grigio. Peter, part owner I believe came over and asked if everything was ok. The fish advertised was Hake, not our cup of tea and we asked if he ever had seabass on the menu. As we had booked again for the Friday he promised he would try and have some seabass fillets on the menu.
Fridays visit was even better than the first with Peter advising that he had some fresh seabass and how did we like it cooked. My wife chatted with him and he produced two large seabass fillets panfried and with a mild chille sauce and on a bed of vegetables. More vegetables followed. The meal and the whole visit was a joy and this must be the best restaurant in Ambleside for price and good food. We will certainly re-visit and our thanks to Charlotte for again looking after us and Peter who made our visit complete. Mind he was a distant "geordie" which makes the difference!!

We tried Matthew's on the recommendation of a couple of people we met. Unfortunately we were disappointed with both the surroundings which were dull and dated, and the food which for the price was very average.

We were staying in nearby Windermere for a few days but could not make up our minds on a restaurant within walking distance of our hotel, so we went for this well-reviewed bistro in Ambleside; we were not disappointed.

We arrived at 8pm on a busy Tuesday evening. A friendly waiter cheerfully bounded over to us and showed us to our pre-booked table. Within a very short time, another cheerful soul took our order. We ordered a bottle of the house chardonnay, soup (leek and potato), chicken stroganoff and a vegetarian moussaka.

The bistro has a very warm, cosy and relaxed feel about it, and is well decorated.

The soup (served with fresh, warm and crispy bread) was delicious: thick, creamy and packed full of flavour. The stroganoff and moussaka were an absolute delight, too. The portions were a good size, and we left feeling comfortably full.

We shall definitely return on our next trip to Lakeland.
