High Wray was even better than we had expected. Sheila and Chris were welcoming and helpful, with delicious cake and tea every afternoon and top-notch breakfasts. The location is terrific, with none of the Lake District crowds while only 5 minutes from either Ambleside or Hawkshead. As a secluded farm between Latterbarrow and Lake Windemere, there are several excellent walks literally leaving from the front door (Latterbarrow above, the Tarn below). Hawkshead has several decent pubs - the Queens Head in particular - so there is no shortage of places to eat. All of which was enhanced by Pippin the house cat ... Such a great break!

If you're looking for a minimalist, glass and chrome, featureless 21st century boutique hotel with little comfort and poor service then this may not be the place for you. However, if you're looking for charm, character, warmth, comfort, great service and scrumptious cakes (especially the Weetabix tea-bread) and breakfasts, then you've come to the right place. You will feel at home at High Wray Farm as soon as you are warmly greeted on your arrival, and that feeling of welcome and well-being will remain with you long after you regretfully make your farewells. Being a farm, you will, of course, require transport, but the location is beautiful and peaceful, with only the occasional bleating lamb or clucking hen to break the silence. Sheila (the owner) is delightful, and she ensures that all her guests are well taken care of, but at the same time she ensures that they also receive as much privacy as the wish. This is sometimes a difficult balance for a host to achieve, but Sheila is clearly mastered the art. Due to repeat business, this farm is often full, but it is worth making the effort of trying to find an available date, as you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful setting. Quiet yet convenient for Ambleside and the many Fells that are just waiting to be climbed.
Warm & comfortable, nicely decorated and very good facilities. First class breakfast options taken in pleasant surroundings. Sheila is very attentive and a great cook and the little extra offers of coffee with cake/shortbread add that extra bonus.
Certainly will be coming back to savor this Gem of a Farm Stay B&B.

Wot a fantastic place to stay. Althou I am very biased as I ave an infinity for log burners, cats and homemade cakes all of which u will get at this B n B. We decided that this is the best b n b we ave ever stayed in and didnt want to come home. Although the weather was soooo cold and one day miserable it is in a good location and u can walk straight from the door step so car free days can be had. I want to go back now. Sheila is the perfect host.

Room Tip: All rooms are fab. I asked for one with a bath so I could soak away the aches from the days walkin...

if you are looking for a perfect B&B in Hawkshead look no further.. I am almost reluctant to tell everyone how lovely High Wray Farm is in case we find its always booked up! Sheila makes you feel so welcome and the superb breakfast sets you up for the day even if tackling long walks or high fells. Its lovely to come into the warm cosy sitting room and relax by the log burner after a day walking and enjoy tea and home made cakes. Must not forget the delicious home made shortbread on the tea tray in the bedroom either. Its the little things that count!

High Wray Farm: what a wonderful place! I will try to keep this short and sweet else my review could turn into a novel if I am not careful!

Upon arrival I was warmly greeted by Sheila who welcomed me in with coffee and cake by the fireplace in the lounge, which was just what I needed after a long drive! The cake was absolutely delicious! I also met Pippin, the gorgeous pudding of a cat, who was my feline friend for the duration of the stay.

I was shown up to the Latterbarrow room, and I was quite simply stunned at the size of it! Loads of room to make yourself comfortable, beautifully decorated with lots of little thoughtful touches (teddy on the dresser, bath robes in the wardrobe, and home made shortbread on the bedside table) .. I could go on! The bed! Ah, the bed. So comfy!

I loved the peace and quiet of the place, you can hear birds outside your window and nothing else. Perfect!

Breakfast. All I can say is amazing! Sheila is so attentive and a great cook, she is more than deserving of the many awards she has won. The Eggs Benedict was 5* tasty! I Love how you get to make your own toast, using fresh bread and Hawkshead relish jam. The fresh fruit salad and yogurts were lovely too.

All in all, I had a really enjoyable stay. It is obvious that Sheila takes great pride in the running of her bed and breakfast, this is truly hospitality at its finest. There were no other guests at the time of my stay, so I felt a bit like a V.I.P.!

I look forward to returning again in the near future, and can't wait!

We are returnees and have just returned from another wonderful stay. It gets better every year with new little additions to add to the welcome. This year it was the decanter of sherry and an invitation for cold walkers to help themselves to a glass. On our next visit we might just be drawn away from Sheila's traditional farmhouse breakfast to sample one of the specials, Eggs Benedict and Bacon nearly did it but the thought of not having one of the specially made for Sheila sausages was too much. There are walks to do from the farmhouse and Hawkshead is a 2 mile wander over the fell. We have got into the habit of visiting in winter but have made a promise to ourselves to go next time in the summer, but then we wouldn't have the log fire so perhaps 2 trips next year are needed. Thanks once again and see you all next year.
