“Worst Indian meal that we have had”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2013 via mobile

Gave us a table on a Saturday evening without a reservation. Was all downhill from here, service very poor. Not too clean either. Forgot our drinks, had to ask 3 times then they were wrong.
Food very average and chicken tikka masala was like chicken in ketchup! Awful. Chips were just frozen and not home made which we would have liked.Took 30 mins for our starters to arrive then a further hour for the main meals.
Had to ask 3 times and wait 20 mins for the bill.
This was the only Indian restaurant in Ambleside, will definitely travel further afield next time

“Fantastic food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2013

We came in here as a group of six and placed an order to take away. We all agreed that the food was outstanding; certainly I would say it was one of the best Indian dishes I've had (given that I live near Tooting, this is saying something). Highly recommended.

“Great Indian Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2013

We overheard someone speking highly of this restaurant and decided to try it for ourselves. We were not disappointed. The service was good and the menu very enticing. The food was well prepared and presented and was delicious. I think a return visit is highly probable!

“Group booking”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2013

I visited the spice of Bengal with a work party 7 years ago and is wasn't bad. Unfortunately we returned this year with 29 of us. The hygiene standards in the toilets were pretty grim and the service was very slow, the food lacklustre and nothing special.

I won't be returning - I don't understand how Ambleside hasn't got an amazing curry house as it's one of the main tourist spots in Britain.

“Terrible Food, Sickening Hygiene, and Shockingly Poor Taste”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

The restaurant seemed empty and we had second thoughts about going in, but we had a long day exploring Lake District and wanted to end it with a “nice” curry. Things got off to an ominous start when the waiter left 5 plates on the table, for a party of 6.

However worse was to come: one of the plates had a lump of something altogether sickening stuck on one side. When we pointed it out to the waiter (who claimed to be the owner), he as-a-matter-of-factly pointed out that it was probably “only” some food still stuck from the previous serving. When the rest of us checked our plates to see if a similar “gift” was left stuck to our plates by the previous customers, we discovered that one more plate still has old food stuck to one side.

Having resolved the tricky subject of missing/filthy plates, we found the servings to be on the “conservative” side. So we ordered additional dishes from the menu. We then ordered some more nans (however the waiter/owner took the opportunity to advise in (Fawlty Towers) Basil’esque tone, “each nan will take at least five minutes to arrive” – which indeed it did, eventually.

At the end of the meal we ordered a hot desert, only to find that it was served cold. We asked the waiter/owner if he could kindly place it in the microwave for a few minutes. At this stage he lent over the table and whispered conspiratorially, “we do not like this sort of thing in THIS COUNTRY”. He then went on, “Actually we gave you a table as a favour. Normally we do not serve Indian people. We make an excuse and send them away”.

We asked him to kindly explain what sort of “thing” he was referring to. He happily explained that he (and his staff) did not like it when we called them over about the filth plates, and then when we ordered additional dishes.

Despite having been subjected to such offensive and racist treatment, there was little else we could do except to vote with our feet, having paid the bill in full (including that for the cold desert).

BTW we are not Indians, either by heritage, race, or nationality. We are Londoners, and the last time we checked London was in the same COUNTRY as Lake District.
