Description: The newly refurbished Spice of Bengal is a family run Indian restaurant and takeaway providing exciting and exotic fine Indian cuisine in the heart of scenic Ambleside. In 1986 our late father opened the Passage of India in Keswick, one of the first Indian restaurants in the lake district. A decade later we opened the Spice of Bengal in 1994 and we have continued his commitment to quality cuisine based on our Bangladeshi heritage and giving outstanding customer service. All dishes are prepared with the utmost care in the Spice of Bengal kitchen, using only the finest fresh ingredients and our own special combination of spices. Just like our dishes, our newly refurbished restaurant fuses traditional with modern surroundings, giving a spacious, friendly dining environment.

We have visited this restaurant a number of times since it opened a while ago.
First impressions was not too good, as the layout of the place was a little strange.
But once the order was taken and out food arrived we had forgotten about any of that.
The tables are always set out to a good standard, waiters (when not rushed off their feet) are attentive.
Best of all the food is always to a great quality. We used to eat on the old Indian on the high street in Ambleside but the waiters in there were so arrogant could not eat there anymore, needless to say they have now shut their doors for business!

This was not our first visit and definitely not our last. The colours of the dishes were mouthwatering and the spices tumbled out and burst on the taste buds. We tried identifying the myriad of flavours and agreed that no restaurant in this area offers such a kaleidoscope of tastes. For a truly memorable meal,I suggest customers add on a few of the tasty side dishes and experience the authentic curry flavours. We have never found the staff unfriendly, maybe because we are appreciative and friendly to them. At busy times there may be some delay, but how about talking to each other for a while? I went down and peeped into the kitchen and believe me the chef's were working flat out with a multitude of pans searing, frying and simmering.
We are choosy where we eat. We look for freshness, taste, ambience and value. This restaurant fits them all. And who really cares where they buy their serviettes (and actually they have new ones)? Go with an open mind and enjoy yourself.

We ate here on Saturday night, 4 adults, the food was lovely but the attitude from one of the waiters was awful! Really rude and ignorant!

The service was atrocious, we had to wait ages for the starters to arrive, and then the portions were minuscule!! When the main courses arrive 2 were missing, and all the dishes looked the same! The staff were not very attentive and offered no apologises for the poor service, or missing 2 main courses of our order.

We waited between 45 - 60 minutes for our starters. Two other tables beside us were served in approximately 15 minutes so the waiters' excuse that they were understaffed and very busy was nonsense. No prior warning nor apologies for the time our meal took to arrive. The food was very bland and certainly not a curry that could be recommended. We did not stay for the main course.
