Description: The newly refurbished Spice of Bengal is a family run Indian restaurant and takeaway providing exciting and exotic fine Indian cuisine in the heart of scenic Ambleside. In 1986 our late father opened the Passage of India in Keswick, one of the first Indian restaurants in the lake district. A decade later we opened the Spice of Bengal in 1994 and we have continued his commitment to quality cuisine based on our Bangladeshi heritage and giving outstanding customer service. All dishes are prepared with the utmost care in the Spice of Bengal kitchen, using only the finest fresh ingredients and our own special combination of spices. Just like our dishes, our newly refurbished restaurant fuses traditional with modern surroundings, giving a spacious, friendly dining environment.

“Excellent curry”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

Think of every side salad you've ever had in an Indian restaurant. It shredded iceberg lettuce, a slide of cucumber and a slice of tomato, yes?

The fact our side salad had radicchio, grated carrot and rocket in it was our first indicator that Spice of Bengal is a cut above the rest.

The food was excellent and well cooked. Clearly they have some people in the kitchen who know their stuff. My Shaslick was truly excellent, the paratha very good. Service was subtle but friendly, and they were very accommodating of our wriggly 16 month old child who loved the food too. even better, we didn't leave massively bloated as you do after many curries.

Definitely worth a visit for a good Indian cuisine.

“Fast Service but portions could have been bigger”
Reviewed 8 April 2014 via mobile

The staff were very friendly and the service was certainly quick. We ordered a main course and a starter. The starter was tasty but the portions were not great (ie on the small size). Sadly the draft Kingfisher Lager was lukewarm. I would however try again as it was only my first visit.

Dined here early one evening. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was lovely - Masala was the nicest I've ever had. Good value for money and would eat here again.

Reviewed 11 March 2014 via mobile

Went here on Saturday night, service was fine, food was really good, I had the Garlic chicken, my wife her usual chicken Tikka, both really tasty, good value for money, if in Ambleside and you like curry then pay a visit.

“Nice'ish”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

Food was good quality but there really was not a lot of it (great for dieters). Asked and charged for 8 poppadoms, only got 5 (for 4 people). Waiter started clearing table whilst a friend was still eating, he actually waited for his plate - terrible. Lacked ambience. Would I return? In good X-Factor style, it's a no from me.....
