“The cleanist hotel we have ever stayed in”
Reviewed 12 November 2006

We have just returned from an amazing 3 days staying in the Waterhead it was like a dream come true.
The reception staff were extremley helpful and nothing was too much trouble .
We had reserved a lake view room and it was worth every penny the room was lavish with high ceilings fantastic drapes and beautiful linen and our very own singing and dancing house keeper !
We ate in the restaurant where the service was attentive and courteous without being overbearing
The menu was slightly limited but seemed to cover the majority of preferences and the deserts were worth saving space for.
Overall we found this hotel excellent value for money and absolutley spotless and only wished we could of stayed longer we will be looking forward to returning .

We had a lovely time at the Waterhead. Reception were very friendly and helpful when we arrived - I'd like to think this was typical northern hospitality but you don't encounter it everywhere. Parking was a bit tricky and coming into the front of the hotel you have to pass by cars parked in bays and some of these stuck out so far (range rovers etc) that you are forced to walk in the road (the main A593) to get past them - not very helpful or safe. When this was commented upon to reception at checkout they seemed to think it wasn't their problem.

Our room was lovely though it overlooked the car park - but was quiet with good ambient heating and a very chic and modern bathroom the cleaning of whcih had been a bit haphazard. Still they gave us fresh towels when they turned down the bed and the bed was fantastic - big and very comfortable with good linen and the curtains so effective that it was hard to know when it was morning. Breakfast is served until relatively late (10.30) which was great and the cooked breakfast was good with excellent individual ingredients and the dining room has a good view of the lake. Service though was slow and meant that the toast had arrived and gone cold by the time the cooked breakfast turned up, and that we had to check out late (check out is 11 but it took nearly an hour for breakfast). However, Ion the whole this is a hotel of excellent standard and I'd certainly go back.

Just back from a lovely relaxing two day stay here celebrating my partners birthday. As soon as entered reception was greeted and given our room earlier than the anticipated time and was upgraded to a larger room - a good start. Our room was lovely, and had modern surroundings and our bathroom had speakers of which played the sound of the TV which was handy, our room overlooked the lake which was perfect. We ate at the glasshouse -superb!!!! in ambleside which is about 10 min walk and also in the restaurant of the hotel. Both restaurants were as good as each other. The breakfast is ceral, fruit and muffins but if you want extra you can order a full english. We also had room service this was also prompt and good food. I cant believe previous reviews on this hotel and the negativity of some people, This hotel is great !!!!!! I would definitely go again.

This hotel should learn about first impressions. The receptionist was so unhelpful as to not apologize for our room that was not ready (after explaining that we had driven 6 hours with a 3 year old and a baby), that I found it hard to be impressed with much for the first days. That being said, in the end the restaurant staff and room service was exceptional, and the room was very nice for a family.

If only the entrance situation had changed, I would rate the hotel above average. Please allocate more accomodating resources to make your first impression!

The room was really nice, very modern and comfortable. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. The only let down was the food. The breakfast was inedible and after eating in the restaurant the first night, I would not have returned. I can only describe it as tasteless and bland.

On arrival at the hotel at around 10pm it was rather disconcerting to hear a terrible noise coming from the kitchen extractor. This seemed to permeate the corridors and also the rooms. Luckily as we arrived the kitchen closed and the noise stopped - how this would affect those staying in the hotel earlier I am not sure.

This was the only negative about the hotel. The room was gorgeous, very comfortable and clean. The bathroom was great and nicely decorated with underfloor heating and piped music! The bed was incredibly comfortable and there were some nice touches such as fresh fruit in the room and amazing gingerbread.

Breakfast was faultless - plenty of variety and the quality was excellent.

All in all a lovely place to stay, I just wish we were there longer than 12 hours!

Having booked 2 nights b&b midweek for £270 we were looking forward to a luxurious (by our by no means snobby standards) mini break. Unfortunately we were disappointed in some ways (not all though)... The welcome was barely warm, we were rushed to our room (no. 5) chasing the receptionist down the stairs trying to keep up whilst listening to faint instructions floating past our ears, something about speakers in the bathroom and underfloor heating neither of us heard what was said.

On arrival to our room we had no complaints, 'it looked liked it did in the pictures' and everything worked. Perhaps a little smaller than expected and it was by the road but the noise wasn't too bad.

We only ate breakfast at the hotel partly because of the reviews we'd read prior to our stay and partly because of the poor choice (we only saw the evening menu during our stay - so couldn't comment on lunch). The breakfast like our room didn't disappoint there was plenty of choice and the service was good.

One big bug bear for both of us was to return to our room one evening and find the tv was on, the cushions had been removed from the bed and wrapped messily in the drape then thrown on the floor and then we found two face cloths soaking in the toilet - which reception did kindly come and remove for us!! Before we realised we'd had our turndown service we had thought that we'd been burgled :)

Although as mentioned the room was great and breakfast was good we just didn't feel that we'd got good value for money - perhaps we're too fussy in some respects as to how we spend our hard earned money! If we had money to burn then yes we'd stay here again but we won't be returning otherwise.

Would recommend: Lucy's on a Plate and the walk up to Jenkyn's Cragg - the views of the Lake are stunning. Would avoid: ever eating again at the Lighthouse in Windemere.
