“Wonderful Weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2010

Had a wonderful weekend at the Waterhead Hotel. My mum had booked it as a celebration of my 21st and the manager and staff at the hotel treated me like royalty. The little touches like the complimentary glass of champagne and card made it really special. We also got upgraded to a fantastic room overlooking the lake which was very romantic.

Again I would like to thank all the staff for making my weekend very special and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a special weekend.

It is a good location within 15 minutes walk of Ambleside where there are a variety of restaurants and bars.

We stayed at The Waterhead last year - enjoyed it that much that we decided to stay again. The staff are very attentive and service is brilliant. We love the little things like free dvds to borrow, free internet connection in rooms, complementary fruit, water, coffee, tea and grasmere gingerbread that is replenished everyday in your room. We didn't opt for a lakeside view but that didn't bother us as we hardly looked outside our window - you can easily walk out of the hotel and enjoy the views in full. The breakfast is lovely but beware we found cumbrian portions sizes to be huge - but with all that walking / sightseeing, you'll soon work it off. I would recommend this hotel.

We spent two nights in the area. One night at this hotel and another at Holbeck Ghyll.
Waterhead was half the price but was far better. The room was large with king size bed and had complmentary fruit, water, gingerbread. Chocs under the pillow. Flat screen tv on the wall and a modern flickering electric fire. The ground coffee and cafetiere were a lovely touch. Iron and ironing board hidden away. The room didnt have the view that we had from the lodge room at Holbeck Ghyll but the room made up for it.
The bathroom was lovely and modern.
We also had a lovely meal that was well presented. Drinks were cheaper than the second hotel.
We wish that we had stayed here for the two nights.

The Waterhead is a superb hotel, if you want quality, excellent service and food that is cooked to perfection then this is the place for you.
We stayed for two nights 23rd to 25th July and were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a luxury room. The room was on the ground floor with a lovely view overlooking the garden and lake. The room was spacious with high ceilings and had a TV with DVD player for which you could borrow DVD’s from reception free of charge. There was internet connection, a hairdryer, telephone and a wide range of complimentary tea and coffee which was topped up every day. Plenty of wardrobe space, and an ironing board & iron tucked away in its own cupboard which was a nice touch. The king size bed was so comfortable we didn’t want to get up in the morning but of course if we didn’t we would miss the fantastic breakfast!
The hotel is situated across a road from the lake, but didn’t pose a problem as it was fairly quiet. Nearby just a few yards away you can book one of the many cruises which take you the full length of Lake Windermere for a reasonable price.
The Waterhead Hotel is ideally situated for easy access to Coniston, Grasmere, Keswick, Bowness & Kendal and so makes an excellent base. Ambleside town is about half a mile away within easy walking distance or you can drive as there's ample parking space.
We thoroughly recommend this hotel, it’s a four star and it deserves every single one.

I stayed here last weekend with my teenage son. The price was £191.00 per night for a tiny room. The only wifi was in the reception area, the packed lunch was missing items and not in a " complimentary insulated bag" as stated on the order form, it came in a paper bag. The food was mediocre and the service was terrible. As an expat of 25 years, I've been to some really bad places and also some really brilliant ones, this belongs in the former. The time between courses was at one point only 5 mins and 20 seconds ( my son timed it). Ideally there should be more time between courses.
For the money it certainly was not worth it and I will not be going there again, let alone recommend it to my friends.
