Grove Cottages on Grove Farm
Reviewed 26 July 2014

We arrived at Grove Cottages on a very wet Saturday in July, driving up the very steep and narrow road for a week of cycling in the Lakes. Given the forecast was good we walked into Ambleside and popped to Blacks to buy some camping chairs having had a look around the garden, patio and BBQ areas. It was a 24 minute walk down and almost 40 minutes climbing back with the chairs we bought - it's a steep climb at the start. Dinner was had inside on Saturday with every facility and more you'd expect in such a property available. We rode our road bikes down to the bottom of Windermere and round Coniston on the undulating roads. The climb back to the cottage helped burn off the last of the cafe stop calories with a leg burning 1.4 miles with the first milke being 10% average. On the evening we had a BBQ in the glorious sunshine going in when the sun set behind 'the struggle' and the midges went wild. We really can't fault the location for such an evening with fine wine and proper burgers in hand. We more or less repeated this schedule riding 'The Sruggle', Kirkstone Pass, Great Langdale, Ullswater, Hawkshead Hill and many more. Lots of fabulous Cafe's were visited the best being the new one in Threlkeld, and we ate out at Jintanas twice because they do very good (Thai) food. The property was fabulous with access front and back and at the side for the garden - much better than the others in the block. Really designed for a couple but can fit a child comfortably. All mod cons - including dishwasher and washer dryer used with the bedroom at lower ground level which helped in the ridiculous heat of the week. My cycle computer topped 40c when left in the sun at Coniston! Fantastic week and amazing propererty in a fabulous location if you're prepared to graft at the end of a ride or few beers down in Ambleside.

We stayed in High Grove for a week and will certainly be returning. The cottages are located just over a mile from the centre of Ambleside which meant having the convenience of the town nearby, but it still felt quite remote due to being at the very end of a lane. The cottage itself had everything, and more, that you would want for self catering and was very comfortable indeed. One of the best features about these beautiful cottages are the spectacular views which High Grove could enjoy from two aspects due to being on a corner location. It was a great base for a week in the Lakes and a stunning place to relax in.

I almost hesitate to give this place the praise it deserves, for fear it will become too expensive and overbooked for our future vacations!

We stayed at Little Grove for six nights, and loved every minute. The views right outside the door are some of the best we saw the whole time we were in the Lakes, and the location is perfect for exploring the area, or just wandering in to town for an evening pint.

The cottage itself was very well set up and modern, but still very cosy. Staff we're friendly and helpful. Really cannot recommend highly enough.

Room Tip: Little Grove is perfect for a couple, and I believe the only cottage with a wood burning stove.

We stayed, as an extended family, in two cottages for a week. Beautiful quiet location (although for the non-active, it is over a mile from Ambleside), and wonderfully comfortable with everything provided. I can highly recommend and can't wait to go back! I can also recommend Fullers in Ambleside for a meal.

We have visited Ambelside for years but our stay at Little Grove allowed us to escape the busy town and discover the tranquility of Ambleside.

The Good
The cottage was well equipped for us and our two year old. It offers stunning views of Ambleside and beyond. Otis also very near to the waterfalls walk!

The not so bad
The cottage is very high up and would be difficult to navigate in very poor weather. But this adds to the feeling of escapism when you stay there!

The ugly?
We seemed to be having a constant battle with spiders! It is an old converted barn so it is to be expected. Again, it is part and parcel of escaping reality and getting to the countryside! Maybe provide guests with a duster / spider catcher though!

Eight of us stopped in the farmhouse in November. Its a great place to stay with plenty of room fantastic views and all amenities. With Ambleside a mile away down the road the location could not be better. it is the ideal base to explore the Lakes by foot or car.

We had a fantastic short break in the farmhouse for 3 generations of our family. So much room to be together yet do our own thing if needed, and superbly equipped.
There is a drive to the cottages but it's worth it, and we even discovered that Sainsbury's delivers.
We recommend the Drunken Duck outside Ambleside for their Sunday lunch and Lucy's in town for their dessert. Also the walk up to Wansfell Pike is worth the steep ascent for the wonderful views of Windermere and all around.
In a very rare occurrence for us, I've just been looking at your website for the smaller cottages as my husband and I would love to return next year!

Room Tip: All four bedrooms are of a good size, perfect for 3 couples and a child as the fourth bedroom is a t...
