How do you find a place this spectacular! Rooms are good, clean, but the location is perfect!!
Excellent dinner and breakfast. Staff appears laid back, but very helpful and service was good!

My friend is a regular at the ODG and each time he bought a round of 2 drinks they charged him £4.80, but when I (as a stranger in the bar) bought the same round they charged me £5.35.

I am told that this is their usual practice ..................... one price if they know you and a higher price if they don't.

I do not know if it is the hotel policy or the bar staff making a bit on the side, but I do know it happens on a regular basis,

The important thing about the ODG is its location: everything else pales in to insignificance when you consider that for the sheer majesty of its surroundings very few hotels can ever hope to match. Some of the best hill walking available anywhere on the planet is available straight out of the door and this is surely the primary reason for anyone choosing this hotel. To the hotel itself: Its really absolutely fine. The beds are comfortable, the rooms warm, and the daily maid service replenished the biscuits and made the room as good as new each day. The bathrooms have clearly been updated recently and there was plenty of hot water. The food was good with large portions (watch out for the hot chile: It really is HOT!) and the breakfast is excellent. And the icing on the cake is superb beer to round off a very pleasant stay. If you are expecting luxury you won't get it, if you're expecting good comfort and value for money you will not be disappointed.

Ate at the Old Dungeon Ghyll last Friday on last day of holiday in the Lake District. Is in a really remore part of the valley, and has a great feel to it with a terrific selection of old prints and photographs of the pub and area in the non-dining areas. The food was terrific and plentiful! My father-in-law had game casserole in a Yorkshire pud....extraordinary! The soups, pies and fish that we all had were delicious and all well-priced. The service was also most pleasant (Becky and Annie?) were extremely friendly and made the majority of waiting staff in the UK look the planks that they are...Well done girls!!

Will return next year, and definitely make the trip up to this lovely hostelry.

ODG is taking advantage of people enjoying the fantastic scenery of the Lake District particularly those staying in the campsite nearby, who, at the end of a tiring day, don't want to have to travel too far for their evening/meal in the pub. Take my word for it, go the extra mile and try the New Dungeon Ghyll of Stickle Barn - or anywhere else in fact! Staff at the ODG are unhelpful, meals are extortionate (£10 for a less than mediocre chili) and the loos etc are not as clean as they can be. All in all, a very poor experience and not a good advert for the area. As a Cumbrian I was ashamed at the way this hotel represents our county.

I recently stayed at the ODG with my partner and had an amazing time. Everything about this hotel was fantastic. The only let down was the food, we dined in the restaurant on a Monday night and waited 37 minutes for the starters to arrive and it was a let down, However the young girls made the night, all three were from Hartlepool and were a delight to meet, very friendly outgoing and very hard working. I am unsure as to the previous comments about the staff but i found them all to be lovely and welcoming.

The rooms were very clean and warm.

We are planning another trip very shortly if not just to have another entertaining evening with the monkey hangers.
