Fantastic room (#9), really surpassed expectations for the price range! Breakfast was good, veggie options were available. Take-away packed lunch available. Fantastic ales, great pies. Perhaps could do with non-pasta veggie option like a potato pie or veggie pie (like mushroom leek). Lots of walking and climbing near the hotel. I would say this is an ideal 2 night stop in the Lakes to explore a less populated area but still have a nice warm place to come home to. If you're self-planning the Cumbria way walk, this is a fantastic hotel option between Coniston and Keswick or Coniston and Borrowdale. Offers everything for tired and hungry walkers! The website has photos of each room and a description. The views from the rooms are beautiful.

Room Tip: The website has beautiful photos and descriptions of each room's facilities and view. We loved N...

Can't vouch for the hotel rooms as stayed and have always stayed on the campsite when visiting Langdale valley, but visited (after 20 years) Great Langdale and vouched to visit both the walkers bar at the ODG and feeling lazy also take the option of the full English breakfast in the morning which having pre-booked the night before was a very reasonable 8.00GBP with unlimited coffee and juice. I may be biased towards this place as it was the welcome home after many a day spent on the hills during my hills, but this place (bar and hotel restaurant) remain unique, and looking forward to future visits. Note Breakfast starts at 8am!

We stopped off for lunch on a nice day so decided to sit outside. I went in to order. I have to say that there is a difference between distressed and scruffy. This place looks scruffy. Overdue a coat of paint. The menu was uninspiring but I ordered a Plowman's. What I got was two slices of bread, Brie, Stilton and a lot of vaguely salady things. How dissappointing. A plowman's in my book is good bread and a generous piece of Cheddar with pickle on the side.
Brie and Branston do not go together.
When I drew attention to this it was treated with indifference.

I stayed here with my son after our tent became flooded in a deluge. It's a great refuge from the elements, and a super place to just drop in for a couple of beers (the selection is great) and a great meal after a hard day's hiking. There are several beers on offer, and I recommend the local beer, Yates', after having sampled most of what was on offer. The ODG is one of the best located hotels if you are into high fell walks or climbing, with some excellent trails and first class scenery on offer.

As well as having a great bar, the ODG is also a very nice if somewhat quirky hotel. The rooms are warm and comfy, and I particularly relish the absence of any TVs or piped music. The food was great, even if the service was a little odd. (E.g. the waiter was asking all the foreign guests if they wanted horseradish with their fried breakfast for some reason). I found all the the staff to be friendly and helpful, especially the owner, who was a lovely chap. My only slight gripes would be a) that the shower ran cold after 2 minutes of operation, b) the service in the residents bar was haphazard. Otherwise - highly recommended, for the bar in particular but also as a great base for exploring the Lakeland fells.

This is my favourite hotel. We have stayed here twice- as a couple and with family. Both times it has been welcoming, authentic and the meals are perfect walkers' sizes (i.e. huge). The hikers bar actually has character and unlike many places we didn't feel uncomfortable about walking in with muddy boots. The residents' lounge is cosy and relaxed. We were even lucky enough to have a room with a 4 poster bed last time.

We booked at the last minute for a weekend in the Lake District. As on previous occasions there was a warm welcome, a comfortable room, excellent food (both dinner and breakfast) and the feel of elegant luxury in the residents’ lounge.

We usually eat in the Hikers’ Bar when we arrive there at lunch time on a winter walk. It is a time of year to huddle indoors and enjoy a hot luncheon. However we enjoyed a drink outside in the late afternoon sun. They continue to keep a range of good beers and keep them in good condition.

This is definitely worth a return visit either for an overnight stay or for lunch on a winter’s walk.

Room Tip: Every time I have stayed at the ODG I have enjoyed an excellent room. This question appears to be s...

Last stayed here about 12 years ago and was amused and pleased to see that it hadn't changed a bit in all that time - well, maybe a lick of paint. Perfect location for both walking and relaxing and the staff do all they can to just let you get on with both. We stayed in room 8 with fabulous views of the fells, very comfortable, and while the private bathroom was across the hall rather than en suite, it was clean and modern. We had a lovely evening meal - really tasty, home cooked food and plenty of it - proper lamb shank instead of those scrawny, vacuum packed things often served these days. I especially love the lounge with its big couches, open fire and board games. The hikers' bar next door with its wide range of real ales is an obvious asset too. If you have children and need more family friendly eating/drinking space or more mod cons i.e. TV, then the New Dungeon Ghyll, half mile down the road might be a better choice.

Room Tip: Only a few rooms are ensuite.
