“Beatrix Potter had it right”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2013

Slack cottage is one of the farms that Beatrix Potter invested in during her life. After driving through the Lake District and the Hilltop area, I can see why she did. The scenery is awe-inspiring and the flowers were the most vibrant colors I've ever seen. Slack Cottage resembles the farm house that you would see in the early 1900's. For all intends and purposes, it is still that farm house from the 1900's. The inside is refurbished to reflect what we are used to seeing today. After speaking with the owners, they mentioned that the Ms. Potters Trust doesn't allow them to make too many adaptations to the house. The slate floor in the kitchen is the same floor that was placed when Beatrix purchased the property. The house stone is in the same stone and in same layout as it was during Beatrix's time. This is what made this B&B so cool to me and my family. The owners of the B&B were very friendly and very open about their lives. They asked us questions about our holiday and seemed genuinely interested in hearing our travels. Very awesome indeed!

My fiancee and I have recently returned from a week's holiday in the Southern part of the Lake District. Slack Cottage in High Wray was our chosen B&B, as it offered idyllic accommodation with views over Lake Windermere.
Upon arrival we were greeted by our hosts, Liz and Chris, a charming couple who welcomed us to their beautiful home, which in all ways fulfilled our hopes and expectations.
Our stay at Slack cottage was superb, we enjoyed fabulous food at the breakfast table; delightful accommodation within a homely and friendly attmosphere.
We enjoyed a wonderful holiday. Thank you Liz and Chris from Peter and Jan

14/07/13 My husband and I booked Slack Cottage through the internet for four nights after reading all the good and bad reports, deciding we would make our own judement! . We arrived and were warmly welcomed by Liz and Chris, shown our beautiful room which overlooked the garden and Lake Windermere and fell in love with the place. Liz and Chris could not have been more helpful with maps and their knowledge of the district was immense. The bedroom and ensuite was spotless with Liz cleaning every day. The breakfasts were beautifully cooked and enormous - we did not need lunch. They showed us a lovely place in the garden where we had drinks and nibbles most evenings before going for dinner, we even saw a red deer nibbling close by. We are Bed and Breakfast owners and I did learn a thing or two from Liz and Chris and hopefully will use them to better my performance as an owner. We hope to return maybe next year. We have travelled all over the world and stayed in many B&Bs and can say that Slack Cottage is one of the best B& B's we have visited . Thanks Liz and Chris for a lovely stay .

Me and my partner stayed at Slack Cottage last weekend and we had a very pleasant time. The location and room was great and we found the hosts very welcoming. A big five-out-of-five for the breakfast! Would definitely stay there again if ever back in the area :)

A truly wonderful experience! Nestled on a very secluded hillside on the edge of Lake Windermere you will find this little gem! And what a gem!!! The only "downside" was that we only had two days to spend there this time. This time....... We plan to return. We were welcomed from the get go. From the moment we stepped across the threshold we were embraced by the warmth and comfort that Liz and Chris provide in their beautiful home.
We were treated to the pleasure of Room 1 which quite frankly has one of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in. There are the personal touches that you will never get in a corporate venture - beautiful paintings and photographs that tell a story of the house and its surroundings; artefacts that Liz and Chris have clearly collected and cherished from their travels are generously left on display and shared for guests to enjoy; beautiful decor and furnishings that are stylish, tasteful and perfectly in step with the cottage and its majestic surroundings. Lovely selection of teas and hot chocolate. There are all the things you might need if staying a bit longer too - ironing board / iron; hair dryer, dynamo powered lamp for late night wandering!!
Although there is the most impressive array of DVDs there really is no need! The tranquility of the setting draws you in and all you need is a good book and that view!!
The en suite was immaculate, huge shower, piping hot water, big fluffy towels! Perfect for the end of a long days walking!!
The breakfast was to die for - do not shy away from a cooked breakfast! The sausages alone make it worth it. And let's face it with all the walking you will do you need a good hearty start to the day! But if you want to stick to cereal and fruit it's all there, all freshly prepared.
The views were outstanding. To see the cloud lifting over the lake whilst listening to the dawn chorus - magical. From the cottage you can take lots of beautiful walks right on your doorstep. Equally hop in the car and take off to explore because the cottage is ideally situated to go in any direction.
Liz and Chris are the perfect hosts. Welcoming, knowledgeable, there to help. How lucky are they to live in such an amazing place. And how lucky the happy wanderer to be welcomed in to share it. Thank you, thank you, thank you from Peter and Jo

I don't usually write reviews of where I've stayed but I feel after reading some of the below reviews we would like to put our point of view.

Myself and my partner have just returned from a 3 night stay at Slack Cottage. The reason for our visit to the Lake District was to do some cycling. When we pulled up to the cottage we were blown away by the views. The view of Lake Windermere and the mountains were breathtaking. We were welcomed warmly by Liz and Chris into their beautiful home. Liz advised us that we are welcome to use the extensive selection of DVD's at our leisure due to them having no TV reception - if I am honest I love my TV so was a bit nervous having to cope without watching my programmes, but I can honestly say it was wonderful and just added to the relaxing atmosphere that the cottage and area has to offer. Liz was also kind enough to recommend some fantastic restaurants, I recommend listening to the advise they give as the meals we had were fantastic and not overpriced (Queens Head in Hawkshead and Matthews Bistro in Ambleside). We stayed in room 1 which was a lovely room with amazing views of the lake. Every morning I would wake and be in ore of the view, and each day it never got boring.

Each morning we were presented with fruit, cereal, as much toast as we would like, tea and coffee and a fantastic cooked breakfast. Chris and Liz were a great help and were there for a nice chat each morning and to give us any help that we needed in the area. We were even lucky enough to see the new pups that there dog had recently had - very cute.

Overall the holiday was amazing. Slack Cottage is a beautiful B&B with amazing views and it is very kind of Liz and Chris to share there home with others and we would again like to thank them - we will be back.

I would like to urge others to not stay away due to the bad comments.

In my opinion for those who have wrote bad comments do not deserve to stay in such a lovely home with kind people. In future they should probably look for a less personnel touch of a Premier Inn.
