“Charming hotel ... excellent hosts!”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

We have just returned after spending 3 nights at The Riverside Hotel.
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome. Brenda & Dave greeted us warmly & gave us a brief description of the house & immediate area. Dave's detailed knowledge of the area enabled us to make the most of our time there. All his suggestions of walks to enjoy & good quality places to eat were spot on.
The house has a very relaxing ambiance & is beautifully furnished .... perfect for 2 townies to unwind!
The breakfasts were beautifully cooked & we were treated each day to Brenda's homemade bread, a different recipe each day, which was delicious!
The bed was so comfortable we both slept very well & through the open window all we could hear was the gentle sound of the river.
There were lots of other thoughtful touches ... umbrellas & torches to borrow, a daily hour by hour weather report on the breakfast table & lanterns on each step & up the path to guide you in at night.
We will definitely return ... thank you Brenda & Dave. x

A beautiful gem, we had two wonderful nights here. Brenda & David are perfect hosts, sharing their knowledge of the area. Room was spacious and comfortable, they have thought of everything you could possibly need. Breakfast was amazing, we skipped lunch. All local produce that was just cooked to perfection. Could not recommend highly enough.

We stayed for 6 night in the Riveside B&B in Ambleside in August 2014. Dave and Brenda welcomed us very warmly and made us feel at home from the very first moment. We had lovely rooms with all the necessary things.Dave has so much information on the region, you can spend days reading everything, there is tourist information, all kinds of leaflets, guides on walks, restaurant reviews... His suggestions on what to do were excellent. The breakfast choice is also very good, all kinds of cereals, muesli with fresh fruit, full English, salmon... So all in all a wonderful stay. Just one note on the breakfast times. We are used to have early breakfast and it was only possible from 8:45 toll 9:30.

Loved this little hotel, and David and Barbara really are the perfect hosts who look after their guests with 5 star service, and I have to say that breakfast was the best I have had in a hotel in the U.K, perfectly cooked and really tasty. We stayed at the end of July for 3 days in the 4 poster room which is just lovely overlooking the river, would have expected the 4 poster room to have a king size bed rather than a double but other than that we just loved everything, and I believe that there are king beds in some of the other rooms that are just as nice. David is very informative and recommended some great walks and things to do. There is so much attention paid to detail to make your stay comfortable like umbrella's and torches for when you go out, (you do need a torch as the road is unlit) night lights in the rooms, wonderful toiletries that really does include all you need in the bathroom, nice gardens on the hillside and a lovely little suntrap at the rear of the property where we enjoyed a drink sat on the loungers, we were also blessed with hot sunny weather so all in all a perfect wedding anniversary celebration. We will return.

Stayed 2 nights at early August 2014 at Riverside. I was initially surprised that the B&B does not have a unit number, it just said “Under Loughrigg” which was a really long, winding road but if one were to drive further in, one should not miss it. Overall, it was an extremely memorable stay. Two thumbs up!

It was rainy when we got there so the carpet looked a bit dirty because some guests had dragged their dirty shoes in. But in spite of the carpet at the main entrance, the facility was clean and well-maintained. The longue area on the ground floor was large and quite cozy. The hosts had a small desk full of local guidebooks and driving routes guide which guests can borrow. They also maintained a folder of restaurant menus from nearby restaurants along with a separate folder with guest comments on each particular restaurants.

The location of the B&B was pretty good. It was away from the crowd at Ambleside but sufficiently close to the city centre (around 10-15 minutes’ walk or 30 minutes’ stroll).

The proprietors, Dave and Brenda, were hospitable and friendly. They make great hosts and I can see that they put a lot of attention to the details. For example, during breakfast, the hosts printed a copy of the day’s weather forecast and the headline news. If you happen to sit by the window during breakfast, you would notice a bird-feeding station in the yard outside. It’s so relaxing to watch the birds feed while you have your breakfast. Breakfast was delicious. I had smoked salmon with scrambled egg. The egg was done to a very high standard, it was moist, soft, and well-seasoned. Brenda made different bread every morning for breakfast and it was delicious. We had brioche bread on the first day and blueberry bread on the second day.

I should also mention that Ambleside is about 10 minutes’ drive from Langdale Valley (google and set your GPS to Dungeon Ghyll), which in my opinion, is the highlight of my trip to the Lake District.

I highly recommend Riverside to travellers who want to visit Ambleside.

Riverside is the home from home you were looking, which is owned and run by Bren and Dave, who put all their heart into giving you the most thought through customer experience. Dave and Bren have thought of every single detail to make your stay the perfect stay in the lake district and not to mention the high standards of the facilities.

The house has very spacious and very light rooms - all with their own bathrooms incl. bath tubs. All rooms are very quiet as you are just slightly out of Ambleside and this is the only house for a couple of hundred meters down a quiet lane. There is a beautiful river running parallel to the house which is the only sound apart from the tweeting birds that you'll hear.

The house has the most incredible back garden to which you'll have access and cushions and blankets are provided to take outdoors. Lots of bird and deer watching can be done in this garden.

The property is the perfect base if you like a gentle walk or good hike in the Lake District and is just a 15mins walk (through a park) to the town centre of Ambleside. Dave will provide you with lots of info on all different walks to take and history around some of the amazing places near by.

The breakfast is to a very high standard - Bren makes a variety of homemade fresh breads which are complimented with homemade jams and marmalades from local bakeries. The majority of the food is locally sourced. Even the bathroom toiletries are locally produced in an eco-friendly way.

Loved it - and will recommend this as a base in The Lakes to everyone. We cannot wait to visit again soon!
