“Just like last time!”
Reviewed 21 August 2009

This was our second visit this year - this time with the kids (22, & 20!). Everything was consistent with our previous visit, from the lovely rooms to the quality of the breakfast! Dave and Brenda made us all feel most welcome.

Where to start, its all been said. The Riverside and Brenda and Dave make the ideal location for a short break or holiday. The scenery and wildlife are superb. Where else could you see a handsome stag in the back garden out of your bedroom window or in the local fields as you walk into Ambleside for your evening meal. We just keep going back for more. It's a home from home nothing is too much trouble for Brenda and Dave. The breakfast deserves a 6 Star Rating as does everything else at the Riverside. Look forward to our next visit. Thank you Brenda and Dave.

This place is so good that I want to keep it a secret lest it gets too popular and I end up not being able to get a room when I want to.

Unfortunately, word is already out with this being the top rated Ambleside B&B.

You get a level of service here that is rare, even in the Grand Hotels, and not as invasive.

Location: Beautiful. On a quiet road over looking the river Rothay. Ambleside is a very pleasant 10 minute walk. At the right end of Ambleside for some of the best walks.

Rooms: Ten of them, all en suite. Decent sizes and bright and airy, all in good order and well appointed. Tea milk and bottled water replenished every day. Very pleasant public lounge with lots books, games, music etc. Free Wi Fi (unlike some irritating competitors).

The only thing that perplexes me is that I never saw all the staff that must toil relentlessly to provide such accomplishment:

Cleaner: Fastidious, spotless. Surely Aggie and Kim from ‘How Clean is your House’ do it? Rooms are cleaned and beds made daily.

Chef: Breakfast only. Fantastic range of choice and beautifully cooked. Gary Rhodes must be in the kitchen. No other meals available but 40+ eateries 10 minutes walk away. Printed weather and news sheets at each pace setting every morning. Watch out for the Monty Python sauce bottle though!

Concierge: Remember the guy from Pretty Woman? He must be here somewhere. If you haven’t stayed before you get a 15 minute chat to determine which of the bedrooms will suit you best. Wet clothes and shoes mysteriously disappear and reappear bone dry. Music and DVD film library, loads of advice on eateries walks and things to do when it is too wet. DVD player in your bedroom if you like. My wife didn’t need an evening gown made but I did consider asking, just to see.

Car Parking Valet: No sign of Jensen Button but cars were moved for us from the ample car park to higher ground as a precaution when the river swelled due to freak summer rain. This was very welcome when things were a bit blurry after a fine dinner in Ambleside.

Gardener: Lovely, tranquil gardens. Is this where Monty Don retired to? Fresh flowers everywhere in the Hotel.

Boiler Stoker: You return wet and cold (in July), tired from a 10k walk and there is a trickle of lukewarm water which gives you a two inch bath in twenty five minutes. Not here. Loads of steaming hot water fills the generously sized baths to the brim in five minutes whenever you want (we were on the top floor too). Even, it seems, when everyone wants one at the same time.

In reality, all of these people are just Brenda and Dave Milne. It is remarkable, really. Perhaps they could be persuaded to run the Country.

Absolutely brilliant! The breakfasts were very good quality food indeed. The hotel is spotlessly clean. The rooms are really comfortable. Dave and Brenda are excellent hosts and have lots of suggestions for walks, as well as a fully stocked library of OS maps, Wainwrights and lots of books of walks. Excellent location to walk the fells by day and walk into Ambleside in the evening - no need to use the car at all. We can't wait to return and can understand why so many of the other reviews say the same.

This was our third visit and as always standards were excellent, a comfortable and clean
room, great facilities and a host and hostess who can't do enoughto please. Breakfasts are beautifully cooked and there is always an extra special touch with the home made breads. For walkers there are always maps available and advice is offered for trips by ferry or bus, another nice touch is the news and weather info which you find on your breakfast table each morning. if you just fancy a relaxing day, the lounge is very comfortable and the location is beautiful if the weather's fine enough for sitting outside.
