We are a large group (13) of friends who have had a meet up yearly since 1986. Rothay Manor we all agreed was the best by far of all the hotels we have stayed in. All the rooms were wonderful, spacious, comfortable and very clean..Dinner and breakfast was just scrumptious. One of our group rated the sticky toffee pudding as orgasmic!..After dinner we were served coffee in a small lounge just for us. this meant we didn't disturb any one else and could relax and enjoy each others company. The staff were helpful and friendly nothing was too much trouble. We are all agreed, definitely be back.

Room Tip: All rooms that we saw are lovely, the superior rooms with a balcony are a bonus.

This was a two day discounted break from travel zoo, yet another of their great deals. The hotel itself is an old building, welcoming entrance and a warm feel about it.Nice receptionist, quickly booked in and shown to our room( room 9) Very spacious, warm and tidy...good size shower and clean bathroom .Every thing was in the room, tea coffee biscuits and t.v, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space Dinner on both nights was excellent , the game cobbler was out of this world, the taste was delicious,i prefer a large meal myself but the quality of the food made up for the quantity. The cumbrian platter for breakfast was another meal for the chef to be proud of, every thing on the plate was top notch and included kidneys and blackpudding, the wife had the veggie version and she agreed it was very good. The price of drinks at the bar was a bit expensive but we only had a few anyway so didn't really mind. The staff in the hotel were pretty friendly and the service in the restaurant was good. Ambleside is a nice place to walk around as is Grasmere with its Ginger bread shop, also Windermere , with its Lakeland shop, is only ten minutes in the car...No crowds this time of years is a bonus...Will come back soon .
,

Room Tip: room 9 is a good choice

Have just come back from a wonderful two day break feeling totally relaxed and content with life! We booked a discounted two day break with TravelZoo which included breakfast and evening meal (2 courses). Upon arrival we were shown to our room (8) which is at the back of the hotel but overlooking a little stream across the road, this room was tastefully decorated, quiet, clean and welcoming. The bathroom had a very big shower and the towels were lovely and soft.

Dinner was wonderful - from the starter to the main meal (we did originally think dessert was included in our deal but was told it was not) but to be perfectly honest, the starter and the main course were more than enough to fill us up especially as two small canapés were given to us upon arrival for evening dinner to sample. We chose lamb shank one night which was huge and venison the second night which was very tasteful and I understand that the chef/cook had been at the hotel for 35 years - and we certainly believed he/she knew what they were doing!

Breakfast was to your choice ie: continental, cereal, fruit juice, full Cumbrian, salmon/eggs etc and plenty of it.

The staff were friendly, took time to have a small chat and very helpful. Service from them in the restaurant was first class.

Husband and I went for a 5 mile walk around Rydal Water and Grasmere - first bonus was seeing a red squirrel (I have only ever seen 2 in 58 years!) and second bonus was about 2 miles round snow came which made the scenery magical albeit a little slippery!!!

On average a beer cost £4.20 and a large glass of red wine £7.15 in the hotel. I believe that evening meals were £32 per person for two courses and £39.50 per person for three courses but as previously mentioned, this was included in our TravelZoo rate of £129 per couple per night - so well worth the money.

We did not use the Spa which are provided elsewhere so can not comment on their facilities.

My husband and myself and our two friends had previously stayed at this hotel 2 years ago, so when we saw a discounted rate on Travelzoo we decided that we should take advantage and booked a two night break over the last weekend.I have got to say that everything was just as good as last time. When we first arrived the cold water tap in our bathroom was not working so I reported it. While we had our afternoon tea, which was delicious, the plumber was called and it was fixed by time we got back to our room.We had room 9 and our friends room 10, both of which were extremely comfortable, quite large and, more importantly, quiet. The food was as good as we remembered it last time. At breakfast the porridge was the best I have ever tasted. So creamy it was like rice pudding! All the staff were friendly and courteous and on hand if we needed anything. The weather was not good while we were there, but it didn't matter as the hotel and the food was the main reason for our trip. I look forward to more offers in the future. Well done everyone!

Room Tip: Rooms 9 and 10 were lovely and quiet.Room 10 is on a corner, so has a double view.

This is an excellent place to stay if you love walking and want good food, a warm fire and friendly service on your return.

But having stayed in numerous hotels on business, my husband and I were looking for something a little more relaxing and had clearly misunderstood that he spa was not attached to the hotel... nor is it within walking distance! In fact, it is several miles away!!!

So dreams of lounging around... having spa treatments and being pampered were not on the agenda here.

The house is dated as are the suites. However, the suites are spacious, quiet, clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and the food is thoughtful and well cooked. Didn't try the afternoon tea as too full from breakfast and dinner. Very good value for the money too.

But be warned about the spa. Painted toe nails, flip flops and a drive back is not my idea of a relaxing spa treatment.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay. I am very happy you enjoyed your stay, particularly the food and wine. Whilst I agree the decor is not the most modern, it is in keeping with a 200 year old building. I was a little confused by the comments about the Health Club & Spa. We do not advertise these facilities as being on site as they are not, however they are not miles way. According to google maps the Salutation Hotel & Spa where we are members is 0.7 miles from the Rothay Manor, a 3 minute drive or 10 to 12 minute walk, perhaps you did a couple of laps of Amblesides' dreaded one way system on your way there or back??

Excellent walking and other holidays at Rothay Manor encouraged me to try their three-night New Year break this year. It fully lived up to my high expectations, despite the wet and windy weather. The staff were as welcoming and helpful as ever, the accommodation, food and wine as good, the other guests as friendly, the entertainments as varied, ingenious and pleasantly taxing, and the whole experience as enjoyable as I hoped it would be.

This was my first Christmas stay at Rothay Manor, country house hotel in the Lake District. I shall most certainly want to go there again.

Every aspect of my stay was most enjoyable. My room was especially comfortable, the food was superb and the staff were most courteously kind. Indeed, apart from the very high standard of the hotel itself, my Christmas stay was enhanced by the way in which the management had arranged such things as various entertainments and diversions for their guests. All very civilized and reminiscent of a country house Christmas with a group of friends

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed to be if the same high standard.
