“Excellent in every way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2011

We stayed at the Rothay Manor for the first time. We have passed it many times on visits to the Lakes over many years.

We received a really friendly welcome and were shown to our room (room 1) which was fabulous. Huge, beautifully designed and decorated, immaculately clean with all the things you would need. Our room overlooked the garden and was extremely quiet at night. The one and only fault we can mention was that the shower wasnt very powerful. Only a minor complaint.

The bar and lounge areas are lovely and comfortable and again beautifully designed. Nice areas to relax in before and after your meal in the evening. The food was delicious with a lovely choice of dishes. The quality and quantity excellent. The staff were extremely friendly and efficient. Breakfast was excellent too.

The Hotel is in a nice position. A relatively short walk along the river and through a park leads into Ambleside centre. Or an even shorter walk via the main road. You are only a short drive away from Elterwater and the Langdales. Ambleside is an ideal place to stay for visiting many parts of the Lakes. Grasmere, Windermere, Coniston, Hawkshead. Keswick, and our favourite Buttermere are a little further. Fantastic scenery.

It was nice to see people staying here of different aged groups. The Hotel also feels quite spacious and the dining areas and lounge areas are extremely comfortable. Our last stay at a Hotel in the Lakes was so warm it spoilt our stay.

We really enjoyed our weekend break and can't wait to return.

Stayed two nights - will sum up briefly.
Room 6/10,
Service 10/10 Staff superb!
Beakfast 7/10
Dinner 4/10 Tries to be something it isn't and kitchen quality not up to it.
Decor in lounges and paticularly dining room quite dated and in need of a revamp.
We stayed on a special offer deal, would certainly not pay full rates.
Shame, because staff are quite exceptional, there is a nice atmosphere but with a little more attention to detail and kitchen output it could be a real winner that justifies the prices.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review for us. We agree whole heartedly that the staff here are exceptional, with their professionalism helping to make the hotel friendly, informal with great service and a superb atmosphere. We are disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy your stay, however, we do agree that the decor in the lounges and dining room was in need of updating. This had already been scheduled in for January 2011 and we are delighted with our new bar and the redecorated lounge and dining room and hope that you will return to see them.
With regard to your comments regarding dinner, we were sorry to hear it was not to your taste. It is very difficult to offer a menu that will please everyone as it depends so much on individual taste and expectation, however most of our guests do thoroughly enjoy their meals. We do thank you for your comments as the chef always takes them on board.

We stayed at the Rothay Manor for the weekend on a dinner, bed and breakfast package in a superior room. Upon arrival we recieved a very warm welcome from the staff and were shown to our spacious, comfortable room. While we were in Ambleside it was snowing which propably enhanced the cosiness of the bedroom and lounge areas. The food was wonderful and I would certainly recommend staying here with dinner included in your stay. All of the staff who we came across during our stay were friendly, approachable and attentive. We will definately be back (money allowing!)!

Thank you for taking the time to put a review on TripAdvisor. We are delighted that you enjoyed the accommodation and the food during your stay, and, although the weather wasn't great (depending on your point of view), there are certainly worse places than the Lake District to be snowed in!
We look forward to welcoming you back to Rothay Manor.

Just spent the weekend on half board basis at the Rathay Manor on one of their super off season savers. Possibly the most friendly and professional service I have recieved in the UK in the last 20 years. Great Menu, good wines and fab deserts. The rooms are classic in style and very roomy and comfortable. Not the most modern of hotels and decor and all the better for it. This is a hotel and service that is truly memorable. This is our first stay and we are looking forward to our return already.

Visited for Sunday afternoon tea and champagne for a family birthday treat. Loved it!
Sandwiches, scones (with jam and cream), tea breads, cakes, cream cakes - washed down with champagne. (And a wide choice of speciality teas, Earl Grey, Lady Grey, etc., etc.) What's not to like?

We are delighted that you enjoyed your Champagne Afternoon Tea as part of the birthday celebrations. With our 'buffet-style' Afternoon Tea you are certainly spoilt for choice with the number of savouries, sandwiches, cream cakes, scones, tea breads, cakes etc on offer, and, whether you choose from the wide selection of tea's or a glass or bottle of Champagne to go with it, it's a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon. We serve it every day (except Christmas Day and some dates in January), and it is really popular so its always best to give us call before you come to avoid disappointment. Look forward to seeing you again soon.

This was the first time we have stayed at the Rothay Manor and were very pleased with our choice. Our suite was very comfortable, the food was great and the service provided by the staff was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely return next time we are back in the area.

Rothay Manor has kept its high standards for many years. The food - breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner are consistently imaginative and delicious with attention to immaculate presentation and use of quality ingredients.
The rooms are luxuriously appointed and comfortable. The welcome and care from the staff is individual and genuine. The public rooms are beautifully furnished and comfortable and yet one feels able to be completely relaxed and unhurried. Help with the menu and wine choices was immediately and willingly given with real understanding, interest and knowledge.
A special place to return to again and again.

We are delighted to hear how much you appreciate the high standards we try hard to maintain at Rothay Manor, and the friendly atmosphere is what we feel makes the hotel so special.
Food has always been a major factor of the 'Rothay Manor experience' and it is great to know that you enjoy it as much as ever.
We are very lucky to have all our staff, who are the welcoming 'face' of the hotel and a real asset. All are friendly, personable and professional and will happily go the extra mile to ensure people enjoy a memorable break.
Thank you for taking the time to add your comments, we look forward to seeing you again soon.
