We stayed here on valentines night in room 10 which has been recently refurbished. Great views from both windows across to the fells and up the valley. Comfortable four poster bed which in my opinion is too big for the room. No bath but large powerful shower with plenty hot water. Friendly staff and lovely residents lounge with log burning stove and views. Dinner in the restaurant was homemade and tasty. Wine was reasonably priced and I particularly enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc. We had a special offer deal at £140 per couple DB&B and to be honest I wouldn't want to pay any more than that, but I would definitely return to this hotel. Bear in mind that these are winter sun to thurs rates so will be more in the summer and weekends.

Room Tip: There are only 4 rooms with a bath so you will need to request it on booking if you want a long soak...

We stayed for 3 nights B&B at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel for the first time. Very friendly and efficient staff. We had Room 5 on the first floor with a good view across the Dale. The room was adequately equipped, the double bed a bit softer than we are used to but we slept OK. Excellent bathroom and particularly the shower. Large sitting room with wood stove, pleasant dining room which we used both for breakfast and one evening meal. The adjoining Walkers Bar was lively with a good choice of bar food.
Walks are possible direct from the hotel which has a good choice of local guide books. It was very wet and windy and snowy during our stay and the facilities in the drying room ( a wooden shed at the back of the hotel) were just adequate but perhaps could be on the to-do list.

We had a truly memorable New Year 2 night stay at this Hotel. Checked in on New Years Eve after a fantastic visit to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park to see the latest and most beautiful animal in the collection, the Snow Leopard.

We were met and greeted by the lovely Sheena, who seemed to be everywhere at once, Reception, waiting on at Dinner and then at breakfast. But no matter what time it was, she had a smile and a polite way with everyone,

We cleaned up & dressed up & then went down for canapés & Champagne in the lounge whilst we decided what we wanted to eat from the sumptuous 5 course dinner menu.

The dinner was absolutely superb, although they do err on the side of caution in the seasoning department. This was good for me, but my Partner did need to add salt & pepper to his taste. Agree with the cautious approach though - easier to add seasoning than take it away!

Next up was the evening entertainment - Bodgers Mate, and we enjoyed hours of live music from an extremely talented trio of musicians! Even broken strings didn't deter them from delivering a top class night of musical entertainment!

And then, to top it all, a firework display at midnight that was probably the best I have ever seen, The lack of background lighting gave us a velvety black backdrop, sprinkled with stars even before the firework's exploded across the sky, And oh boy, what fireworks!!

Back in the bar later and a huge big thanks to Jon & Anton for keeping the drinks coming into the wee small hours with a smile all the time in spite of constant demands at the bar.

Eventually off to bed in the newly refurbished four poster room (10) and an exceptionally comfy bed with lovely squidgy pillows.

Morning came too soon!!

Thanks again to the fantastic team at this Hotel who combined to make this such a Magical New Year.

We booked last minute and got a good discount with the New Years promotion which was a good start. And when we arrived we were shown to our room, number 10 and it was just lovely. It had recently been refurbished and was so lovely and clean and smelt new! The bathroom was immaculate and had an amazing shower! The room had a four poster bed which was so comfy and amazing views of the valley! After a good walk it was lovely to chill out in that room and at night it was so peaceful!
The only reason we haven't scored this with a 5 is that the breakfast was a bit poor. Despite a sign saying outside that it was the best breakfast, it really wasnt. The staff were nice and efficient but the food let the breakfast down. It was a bit cold and the smallest sausage ever, where was the good old cumberland sausages?!
Despite this we would visit again as the room was so lovely and my husband loves the beer in the bar!

Room Tip: Room 10 - beautiful!!

Happy new year and thanks for your lovely comments, we are really happy with the new look 4 poster room and are getting some great feed back from our customers.
I have passed your comments onto our kitchen team about your breakfast being not very hot. We do not serve Cumberland sausages for breakfast as they are a little spicy, but they are served on our bar food menu. Our breakfast sausages are from our local butcher in Ambleside, on your next visit with us just ask for 2 if on the small size, its no problem.

We've been to the NDG four times now and (with one trivial exception!) it just gets better.

We booked for the last weekend before Christmas and the manageress (Rebecca) warned us that there would be no food on Friday since the staff were off on their own Christmas meal in Ambleside. We went across to the Sticklebarn for some pub grub. That was OK. It was rather curious having the hotel almost to ourselves - but it was all fine. No problems and exactly as described.

The room (No 8) was small but comfortable and seemed to be newly redecorated: a perfect room with nice view out over the lawn, and Great Langdale.

Food on Saturday evening was - as always - excellent. Four courses of fine dining and coffee in the lounge for £30 is one of the bargains of the Lake District.

The beer is excellent.

The staff - as always - are friendly, helpful: always keen to deal with any issues (we didn't have any but at reception a lady asked for something and it was dealt with instantly to her full satisfaction).

My only grumble - the open fire in the lounge has gone: replaced by a stove. I'm sure it's safer, easier to maintain, less trouble, less dirty etc etc but the old fire gave the room a real glow in a winter's evening. But hey! I'm being hyper sensitive here - the hotel and food is great. Stay there!

Hi, thanks once again for your great comments. Room 8 has just been refurbished and we are really pleased with it and getting some lovely feedback.
The fires!! We have not replaced the fires since we moved here over 20 years ago and we needed new bits and pieces for each of the 3 fires for them to burn safely, they are not made any more so we opted for 3 new log burners, I must admit they no not have the looks of the open fires but are toasty warm and if the doors are open on them they still look lovely.
Your lovely comments have been passed onto the kitchen.
Have a great New year and hope to see you in 2014.

Been eating and drinking at the NDG for years, only stayed twice. Both times have been excellent and I would reccomend this place to anyone. We stayed for the Langdale Christmas 10k Race which was starting there - three adults and a child. As usual the food was excellent, the staff friendly and helpful and the rooms clean and comfortable. Without a doubt we will be back. Just probably could have done with more of the jingle bells and less of the country and western at breakfast :-)

Room Tip: Our room (23) was fine. As was our friend's (18). 23 is a large family room - plenty of space an...
