“Beautiful Location”
Reviewed 14 June 2010

The hotel is in a quiet location in Great Langdale, surrounded by hills on all sides. There are at least 20 walks that can be taken nearby and the hotel sells the book with them in. The manager runs the hotel very efficiently and her husband is the head chef. The service is friendly by a mix of Australians and locals. We ate in the restaurant on an all inclusive 5 night dinner, bed and breakfast midweek deal. The 4 course menu was changed every 2 days with a selection of home made bread,4 starters, sorbet or soup, 4 mains , and 4 desserts / cheese so there was plenty variety for us. We enjoyed all the meals we had and there was plenty of it. Vegetables to go with the main course changed daily. The restaurant was open from 6-8.30pm and you did not need to book a time. Breakfast was 8-930am and a good selection of cooked English breakfast, cereals etc available.
Mobile phones generally don't work at the hotel but do once you move uphill. There is Wifi which we weren't expecting having read previous reports. It works in the residents lounge and some rooms. We had room16 superior on 2nd floor ( 4 nights) and room 7 standard on 1st floor (1night) and the wifi worked in both. We had booked a standard room but decided on seeing that the superior room gave more space and a larger bed size (5 foot I think) we opted for that and would in future. The bathroom was also bigger in room 16 so gave us room to store suitcases etc. Having said that the first floor windows were larger so the room a bit lighter. We would definitely return.

We've just stayed here for two nights and can highly reccomend the hotel. We stayed in the Garden Room, it had french doors directly onto the garden and was very comfortable, nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. It didn't have a bath but had a large shower instead. The staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We booked the champagne break and there was a lovely bottle of fizz on ice waiting for us when we walked into the room. Great start. We ate in the restaurant both nights and had two extremely good meals, menu changed each night and was of excellent quality. Breakfast was one of the best I've ever had in a hotel and set you up fpr the day. Location is great for walking and the views are stunning. All in all a very enjoyable weekend. We'll definately be back, many thanks for a great stay.

We just had time for one night on this trip, have been before, and we thought that this time the room and public rooms were better, and the food as good as ever.

Before booking this hotel we were told we had the last room available-one on the first floor , superior quality overlooking the front of the Hotel. However when we arrived we shown to a side room, which was rather dark, not at all light and airy. We queried this and were not offered any reasonable explanation and no apology whatsoever. The same thing had happened to my elderly parents 3 weeks previously. They were allocated a ground room with bath and shown to an upstairs room wothout a bath. Both visits were for very special occasions and as it costs a great deal of money we should have been offered a discount, an apology or at least some sort of recompense.
The situation of the Hotel is beautiful but sadly we wont be going back as I was interrupted both nights by the extractor fan from the upstairs room which went on and off repeatedly through the night - some sort of tummy problems perhaps?
I mentioned this again at breakfast but no interest in moving us or an apology. This is room No. 4 - one to avoid!
Food lovely but not in huge quantities - they had run out of one or two things over the Easter weekend.
I would reccomend this hotel only if you are prepared for change!
We were unlucky on this occasion!

It's perfectly situated in the Langdale valley if you want some quality walking up Bowfell, Scafell, Glaramara, etc or the Langdale Pikes, and about a 15 minute drive from Ambleside.

Double room was better than I expected with nice view onto the fells, big bed and a very nice, clean bathroom.

Used the homely Traveller's Bar for dinner and can't really fault it. Food there was good value and although there isn't a huge range of ales, a few pints of Thwaite's Wainwright should keep most happy.

We didn't use restaurant (looked a bit stuffy to me) but after a full day of walking in 2ft of snow we were more than happy to take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere in the bar.

Breakfast was very good with ususal choices although I should have thought twice before asking for a full English ahead of a long walk.

Didn't use the lounge but it looked nice and cosy and the staff were very helpful.

We have recently returned from a stay in this hotel and would highly recommend it. The setting is absolutely stunning with views of Langdale Pike and some lovely walks surrounding the hotel.

The staff here were very friendly and we enjoyed a meal in the bar on first night, before relaxing in front of a warm fire in the cosy lounge. I'd also recommend the pub next door (Stickleback Tavern?) for a good meal after a long walk.

The bedroom had recently been redecorated and had great views over surrounding hills. A very good shower as has already been mentioned in previous reviews. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the very soft mattress - gave us both a little bit of backache...

For those who enjoy swimming, the hotel has passes for a nearby leisure club.

All in all, a lovely hotel and we definitely hope to return some day soon.

A brilliant hotel that has succombed to cost cutting. Still good deals, but the menu is no longer rotated each night and the beers are not so good..bring back London Pride!!!
The walkers bar has too many tables again trying to catch passing trade. Also dogs were once free and are now charged a room rate!! yet you get nothing for it!! not a dog bed or a tin of Chum. Dogs are also confined to just two rooms which limits guest's choice.
The beds are a little soft which can affect the old lumbar region...
And when are hotels going to start supplying free wi-fi??
