“Great Central Base”
Reviewed 15 September 2011

We booked four rooms at Skelwith Bridge Hotel as a base for our Lake District cycling weekend. We were all allocated rooms in the annexe building across the car park, although this was not an issue as it was only some 20 paces from the main hotel and nice and quiet as there are only six rooms in the annexe.

The rooms were very clean and there was plenty of hot water. We stayed on a Dinner Bed & Braeakfast rate and the food was both good and plentiful. The three course evening meal worked out at just £14 over and above the B&B rate which represented very good value for money. The breakfast was also very good with a large choice.

The hotel decor is very traditional, bordering on a little tired, but this only adds to the character and feels very welcoming. Some hotels in the lakes are too polished and pretentious and do not make you feel welcome - the same cannot be said for Skelwith Bridge.

Finally the staff were really accommodating and friendly and nothing was any troubole. All in all an excellent place for a weekend or longer break and it is positioned very centrally to some fantatsic wallking & cycling areas - we will be back!

Stayed for 2 nights, the location is perfect, don't need to use your car as plenty of walks from the hotel, the food was excellent, our room exceeded expectations knowing the hotel is more traditional (eg wood paneling decor) it was very spacious and had a good view. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. will be back!

Room Tip: Stayed in room 18 (super king size bed) spacious and view out the back, could hear he extractor from...

We stayed one night at a very reasonable rate for dinner, bed and breakfast. Our room was lovely and bright with a nice bathroom and white linen and towels. The food is very good with a nice choice from the set menu. Breakfast was delicious with a good choice to suit everyone. The staff are friendly, helpful and chatty. During our time here we realised that there were quite a few regulars staying who knew the staff so this shows that it must be consistantly good. Thank you for a pleasant break in nice surroundings.

Chesters cafe and shop around the corner from here is well worth a visit, delicious cakes!

Room Tip: Book early, room 25 was lovely.

We had a short stay at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel (our fourth time there) with our 2 year old who can be a handful at times. Whilst it felt like he was trouble for us he certainly wasn't for the hotel staff who were really friendly and helpful.

We very much enjoyed our stay (again) it is in a wonderful location with walks every which way you go. The hotel is clean, has good food and represents very good value.

It's not a posh hotel but it is warm and friendly just what we like and if that is what you like, then we would highly recommend the Skelwith Bridge Hotel

Boring but utterly dependable, great location, adequate rooms, some nice en suites, unimaginative food, currently delightful staff. Given the pretension and corresponding prices of so many lakeland "country hoses" this hotel offers very good value for money.

We spent a few days here with the family to do some fell walking. This is a traditional hotel with modern amenities and so sits comfortably in the heart of the beautiful
Langdales. There are many walks on the lower and higher fells within an easy drive. The food was excellent and the service good. Ambleside is not far away. We will certainly return as the Lakes always call us back.

We stayed here for one night to facilitate an early start for a ramble in the Lake district and because they welcome dogs.. The welcome was lovely from the lass from Liverpool who showed us to our room which was very spacious and all our needs were catered for,

We arrived, as usual with no plan in mind for the following day's walk but there was plenty of information available and we chose one of the walks suggested by the hotel. We chose to dine here for the evening meal which was delicious, as was the breakfast the next morning. The beds were very comfortable.

It's position is a 10 minute drive from Windermere and is ideally placed for walkers. We loved it and will return. Two very minor observations which would have elevated it from "fab" to "perfect" would have been the provision of decaff coffee and something a tad more substantial then the light curtains to keep the 4am sunrise acting as the early morning call! As I said, minor observations.

(we chose to walk over Loughrigg Fell and it provided plenty of excellent views)

Room Tip: Room 10 is great but quite a way from reception
