“Good value, nice location”
Reviewed 20 September 2012

Have stayed here on & off for approx. 20 years. It's not quite up to its previous standards but still a good little hotel, not quite reaching its potential. Staff are friendly and well organised but not sure who's exactly in charge now. Rooms are clean & comfortable but could do with some re-decoration. Food is pretty good. There are good walking options from the door. Will stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms are available in an annex, but we prefer the actual hotel.

Stopped by here on Saturday 15 September for dinner for 4 in the bar. Whilst the service was good the same could not be said of the quality or presentation of the food.

Chips were clearly warmed up and were not fresh.

Egg on the Gammon was hard not runny.

Gammon was dry and tough.

Surely the Chef if he/she has any pride in their work should not send out food which is not good enough for a paying customer at £10.50 per plate. Chef needs to revisit their college notes and 'up their game' as the standard of food we received was poor.

We will not be eating there again and will not be recommending to friends.

My husband & I traveled throughout the UK and Scotland in Sept 2012 and reserved accommodations for only a few nites during our travels. On nites without reservations we took our chances. On one evening we came upon Skelwith Bridge Hotel in Ambleside & lucked out on a wonderful room with a lovely view of the marsh. If you're looking for peace & quiet this is the place for you! Contrary to the other reviewers we found our dinners to be of superior quality. We sent our compliments back to Chef Greg following our meal. They also offered a great list of wines to choose from. Compliments to all the staff for wonderful service. We plan to return to Skelwith Bridge when we return to the Lake's District.

Room Tip: Front of the hotel overlooking the marsh was exquisite.

This hotel is in a lovely setting with nice gardens to sit in overlooking beautiful scenery. The staff are extremely friendly and helfpful. The food is excellent and is the reason we returned here after a trip the previous year. We ate in the restaurant but there is a public bar as part of the hotel which does bar meals. The rooms are fairly small in the main building but do have everything you need in them. What I would say though about this hotel, is that areas are begining to look very tired e.g. worn carpets, one of our bedside tables was held togther with cellotape and the chairs in our room were extensively stained. I would not have sat on them.

We recently stayed here for 1 night. I have stayed at this hotel since I was a little girl. The staff are always excellent and the rooms are always clean. The food however was very disappointing. We opted for the dinner bed and breakfast rate. The starter named "croustade" was appalling it was served in a breakfast bowl which resembled something you would find in the toilet after a heavy night out. Such a shame as this hotel has real potential. The Manager who was sat opposite us whilst I sent my starter back didnt even batter an eyelid and looked to be pre occupied with a dinner date. Massive improvements need to be made in the kitchen for us to return to one of our favourite lakes hotels!!

I just can't remember the year of my first visit to Skelwith - it was many years ago and on the recommendation of my late husband's boss. It has consistently given us a comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable holiday with a clean well furnished room, and an excellent restaurant, or bar food if you prefer. Either way you certainly won't be disappointed. I'm not a dog owner myself, but the easygoing attitude towards allowing well behaved dogs into the hotel seems appreciated (and that's just the dogs!) and I've never had a room where I could detect "odour of dog" remaining. All the staff are efficient and friendly and only too pleased to help if you need them. The hotel in general is full of traditional Cumbrian character and warmth, with fires burning in the grates in winter, and a drying room for wet boots and clothes (well this IS the Lake District, and you aren't going to stay in just because it's raining are you?). Give it a try, you'll love it!

Room Tip: Rooms are more spacious if you pay more for the newer extension part of the hotel rather than the or...

Having just returned from my sixth visit to the Hotel, I can really not fault it, especially for the service, food and value for money.
My recent visits, have been with my Sons, one of whom is Head Chef at le Bistro des Amis in Skipton, and the other being a Chef de Partie at The Box Tree in Ilkley, and although all three of us can be ultra critical, it is difficult to find fault!
The Table d'hote menu is comprehensive enough for all tastes in the dining room, where a friendly and efficient atmosphere prevails.
Bar drinks are at a reasonable price, as is the comprehensive wine list!
Having stayed in both the Hotel rooms and the Annexe, I must say that they are all clean and well presented, but I personally prefer the latter for the views over the river and valley! My only criticism being that they used to have a stand of umbrellas in the Annexe available for residents to use on the short stroll to the main building in the event of rain!
An effective plate warmer, would also be a bonus, as their crockery tends to act as a secondary cooking utensil, with eggs still frying on the plate at breakfast, hot, but not red hot please!
A super place for exploring the Lakes, and higly reccomended!
