“super stay in this cosy hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2013

Just returned from a weeks stay in this lovely hotel. Great staff-very friendly and helpful, great food and a lovely room with the largest bed I've ever slept in! Breakfast was cooked to order and was faultless (delicious Cumberland sausage!) and kept us going on our daily walking expeditions, some days we walked straight from the door and on others ventured a little further afield.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meals too, the menu was very varied and the service was excellent. My favourites were the king prawn with honey and soy starter followed by a pork fillet main with a cider sauce. Very good value, will hopefully return again soon.

Have stayed here three times now. Comfortable, unpretentious and a bit old-fashioned. Nice food, from traditional roasts to more adventurous fish and veggie dishes. Great breakfast, friendly staff. Snug lounge bar, good public one. Three or four large tables outside for drinks or afternoon tea. Small well-kept garden. Dog friendly. Lots of walks nearby. Dinner bed and breakfast is good value. Rooms of different sizes, some quite small. Best to ask.

Room Tip: If in doubt, ask. It's an old building and rooms are not all the same. Part of the charm.

Have been coming to the Skelwith for years. After a brief dip in standards a while back it si back to it's best. Visited recently for a special family birthday and the staff could not have been more attentive and accommodating. Rooms were very good and food excellent. Delighted to see the Talbot back in use as a proper "walker's bar". Service good and prices very reasonable

Room Tip: Little to choose but it is nice to look out over the front of the hotel to the river and beyond

Just returned from another weekend in this dog friendly hotel . Although looking tired in some areas it was a lovely atmosphere as usual . Pleasant food in a restaurant overlooking a river . Drinking wine in a comfortable lounge with friendly guests with the dogs beside us . Great walks from easy flat ones along Elterwater to difficult ones over the local hills .
Great place with an endearing charm .

I have just returned from a wonderful weekend stay at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel. I travelled with my parents and we had booked 1 double and 1 single room for 2 nights on a B&B basis.
The hotel's room appear to be named after local lakes and beauty spots and we were allocated 'Ambleside' (Double) and 'Easedale' (Single), which are located in the annexe, a small building across the car park, containing 6 rooms.
The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, and we found the breakfast service extremely efficient and pleasant, a choice of cereals, fruits and drinks; followed by a choice of hot breakfasts cooked to order. The Bar service at the adjoining 'Talbot Inn' is excellent and a pleasant venue for an outside drink in summer or a winter evening by the fire.
We did not eat our evening meals at the hotel, however the menu looked good, if a little pricey, (£25.95pp for 3 courses). We ate at the Britannia Inn at Elterwater, couple of miles up the road (highly recommended, but be sure to book a table) on our first evening and at the Traveller's Rest at Grasmere on our second night.
Neither myself nor my parents could fault our rooms at the Skelwith Bridge, both were reasonably spacious and well equipped, with full bathrooms including power showers, tea/coffee, flat screen TV and central heating. I have stayed in a number of single rooms around the world and my room here was by far the most spacious and comfortable I had seen, especially the full size bathroom compared to the tiny shower "room" provided in most single rooms.
The annexe is very pleasant to stay in, with more privacy, as you don't need to keep walking through the main hotel doors and also a private entrance which allows guests to come and go at any hour.
We had stayed at the hotel previously in a family room approximately 13 years ago, having got to know the hotel through renting a holiday cottage next door, the previous year.
The hotel also welcomes dogs and offers a number of services, such as towels and buckets of water for washing your dog. There was however no evidence of dogs left in rooms (hairs or smell) probably owing to the high level of cleanliness,. In future I would certainly consider taking my dog with me to this hotel.
All in all I would highly recommend the Skelwith Bridge, for its service, convenient location close to all the Lakeland attractions and routes and the comfort of its rooms. The hotel is well suited to anyone visiting the Lake District, whether driving, walking or cycling.

Room Tip: Rooms located in the annexe have a separate entrance and guests can come and go at any time, althoug...

There is something very special about this hotel; it's authentic in every way. For those who are used to proper old fashioned excellent service which is honestly given by very caring staff, this is THE place. Hotels like this are few and far between – well done you, for finding it…! And that’s why so many of us, who could choose to stay anywhere, keep coming back…!

Just had another (the fourth) weekend here with our walking group. Nice quiet location, helpful staff, large well-eqipped bedrooms, large comfortable lounges. Good choice of different courses for each dinner, all well prepared and an extensive menu at breakfast, cooked to order. Plenty of walking routes to choose from direct from the hotel (drying room available). Centrally located for touring the lakes. Dogs welcome. Drinks at the bar not cheap - lake district prices! Excellent value for money for the standard of accomodation and food.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have the better views.
