“Excellent is the word!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2014

Just back from our first two night stay at The Regent. It was a great experience from start to finish with all the staff and management being professional and happy to chat.

Our room (Garden Room) was first class, very quiet and generously sized. No issues with wi-fi even though these rooms are a short walk from the main building.

The presentation of the hotel public rooms is exceptional, difficult to understand why it only has 3 stars - it deserves more.

Breakfast was amazing, best choice we have ever come across and piping hot and cooked to perfection. We ate in one night, enjoying the 'steak night' deal. Food quality was excellent and even the bottle of wine that came with the meal was of a very good standard.

We look forward to staying again and were not suprised to talk to so many returning guests - why go anywhere else in Ambleside!

Well done to everyone there.

We grabbed a 2 night weekday break bed and breakfast, we picked accommodation due to taking our wee dog.
Hotel welcome friendly on arrival.. We had room service as weather took nasty turn and we decided to chill here.. I ordered blade of beef which I have to say was nothing short of a disaster, tough chewy not at all braised for hours. One of worst cuts I've ever been served..
Second morning woke up at 730 and room next door being sanded! 730.... rang reception and they did go and make it stop however not a lay in that one expected.
This hotel has lots of older couples who seem to return.
I can only assume it's due to be familiar.
Sadly it's one I won't be coming back too.
Bed are comfortable, i would have enjoyed a lay in as that's what breaks are for!
Breakfast - states well known for a scrambled eggs... one of my favourites..lacked seasoning.
Famous for what? Return no!

Dear Chefshep, Thank you for your review. I can only apologise again for a series of errors during your over night stay. It appears that what could have happened did happen to you and these things sometime are beyond reason or explanation. We have already reimbursed you for dinner and our maintenance man will send you a voucher for your disturbance. Again I am deeply sorry. Andrew . The Regent Hotel

We stayed here in January and had a lovely time in the Lakes. The hotel was well-suited to our needs, including breakfast being served until 12 so we could have a lie-in and enjoy our break. Our room (23) was lovely, with a nice clean en-suite and a place to take off our walking boots so we didn't get mud everywhere. The decor was nice throughout the hotel and the location was great, just a 10 minute walk to Ambleside town centre. The breakfast menu is so varied and offers great choice served by pleasant staff.

The reason I haven't given five stars is the lack of promised wifi. The wifi access was poor throughout our stay, which was a real letdown for us as we'd planned to organise our stay using the hotel internet (checking out good walks, restaurants, boat trips and so on) and do a small bit of work. The hotel advertises wifi throughout, though on arrival it turns out there is no access from the courtyard rooms. We had not been told that there would be no wifi in our room on booking, but when we arrived and found this to be the case we decided just to use it in the bar area. The night we arrived, the wifi wasn't working at all, and when I asked the lady at reception what was going on she said she didn't know (not great really!) and asked the bartender to help us out. I appreciated him trying to help but he didn't seem to know much about computers. We tried again the next day and my laptop gained access to the internet in the bar, but my boyfriend's didn't and neither did my iPod touch. However, his laptop did get some very slow internet access in the room! Throughout the weekend the internet access cut out constantly and we ended up going to Costa in Ambleside to plan our activities and do our work.

As the rest of our stay at the Regent was positive, I've given four stars, but the promise of wifi and then lack of it meant great hassle for us. It appears that the hotel is using an internet package suited to a home rather than a business, maybe they should upgrade their internet package?

Another niggle was the size of the bed. We're two average sized adults and have a normal double bed at home, but I felt that the double bed in the room wasn't quite a double, maybe a three-quarter sized bed. We didn't sleep very well two of the three nights we stayed because the bed was cramped.

Apart from these two negatives, we enjoyed our stay. Fab breakfast, good location, loads of parking and lovely rooms. We would return if they sorted their internet out!

Room Tip: If you want to go walking, the courtyard rooms have a nice little area to take off your boots before...

Thank you for your review on TA. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay with us. I do recall your difficulty in getting WiFi connection as do half the Hotel team who tried to help you. It is still a mystery why you could not connect as we and all our other guests had good Wifi service. I am sorry that this distracted an otherwise great stay. Kind regards Andrew

We have been visiting the Regent Hotel for about 30 years. We keep returning because it is a wonderful hotel run by the same family for 35 years. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Everybody is helpful and genuinely friendly. The rooms are comfortable and the food delicious. They serve breakfast till 12pm which means you can have a comfortable lie-in if you want or even breakfast in bed. There is a good choice for all meals. We look foward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building don't involve a walk outside(across the car park or courtyard)

If you've read my previous reviews of this Hotel, You will know I am a big fan - hence we keep going back. We booked to go for New Year's Eve: two nights, three days. We were not disappointed. The staff had laid on a night to remember. We checked in at 3.00pm and were invited for drinks and canapes whenever we were ready. We met up, by chance, with a couple we knew well and spent a lovely hour or so with them. The evening meal was a six-course affair and it was excellent. My starter of poached pear in a walnut dressing was worthy of a MasterChef final. The meal itself was wonderful, but what impressed us the most was the total professionalism of the staff: Our friends had booked independently to us, and whilst enjoying a pre-dinner drink together, the maitre-de led us through to a table for four. We hadn't said anything and yet he'd gauged the situation absolutly correctly, and we enjoyed a superb meal with good company. Top marks Regent - and credit to the Chef and staff.
The evening was finished with a Piper, piping in the New Year and then, as the Hotel is at the shore of Windermere, fireworks heralded midnight from the lakeside.
Breakfast can be a lazy affair if you so wish. Andrew said we might like a swim in the Lake to start the New Year (no, not for me), and so we breakfasted whenever.
New Year's Day was a relaxing day, checkingout Coniston, Hawkshead and Ambleside before we met up with friends for dinner. Another superb meal and we were truly spoilt for choice. An added bonus to the evening was a visit by a Magician who visited our tables in the lounge to entertain with magic. Excellent.
The whole atmosphere was super-charged with conviviality. The staff were beyond superb: they were wholly professional, yet friendly and warm. The owners of the Hotel, the Hewitts, were all on hand to chat and do as much as they could to make everything perfect: if someone was standing up, a chair was sought out immediately, without fuss - perfect.
As we were breakfasting, we were in conversation with our friends, and one said that he set the Regent as a benchmark for all other Hotels he visited. Whilst one or two got near, not one had achieved consistancy to the standard of the Regent throughout his stay, and most failed. I think that says it all and why so many people keep going back year in, year out.
....and we took our dog too. In fact, there were several dogs over the weekend, all well behaved and I never heard a whimper let alone a bark. A wonderful New Year, thank you.

Room Tip: If you want to take your dog, mention it at booking. A small charge is made for the dog, but it'...
