“Brimstones has arrived”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

Branded as Brimstone Hotel this is actually a new development in the Langdale Estate which includes the Langdale Hotel, numerous up market self catering lodges as well as some off site accommodation. Situated in the centre of the English lake district (almost literally if you use the OS 1:25000 maps) there is great countryside and many walks on the door step. You are also within short driving distance of Ambleside, Grassmere, Conniston and Hawkshead in addition to the central lake land fells. The estate is kept to a very high standard and is served by a leisure centre, couple of bars and restaurants catering for a wide range of tastes.
This new addition is in the no expense spared category of luxury hotels rooms, for example our suite had a baths in the lounge in front of the real log fire and 42” TV. Upstairs on a mezzanine was the bed, another 42” TV and a shower room. All the rooms are on first and second floor levels with generous balconies that look out over the estate and the hills beyond. There is also a reading room stocked with free wine, beer and snacks. The staff are attentive and always trying to help. In short we enjoyed our stay. Having said all that it ain't cheap but this place is more than just a cut above the rest.
Any downsides, well only if you want to be picky, the leisure centre was updated a few years ago but it can seem busy with relatively few people in it. The food on site is a little over fussy for my taste and over priced especially in the restaurant (the buffet breakfasts are great by the way) and yes it rains in the lake district nearly every time I go, big surprise!
Will we go again? Well when we've saved up for many years, maybe, and in the meantime we're going to spend New Year in a self catering lodge, I'll have to make my own breakfasts but the accommodation is as good and generally works out a little cheaper!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms at Brimstones

We've stayed here many times and even got married here.
Unfortunately the atmosphere has changed slightly.
The rooms used to be immaculate and it used to seem good value for money as a result.
Some of the rooms are in need of refurbishment. The last stay revealed the bath base full of filler and mould all around the edge.
The worst change is from a full waitress breakfast to a DIY breakfast. This initially didn't include queuing up to toast your own toast. The experience is now no better than a bargain basement hotel. I can make my own toast at home!
All in all they've taken their eye off the ball and provide a lower standard of room and service for an ever increasing price.
We will still go back in hope that it will improve.

A beautiful place - 100% classy. Food tremendous. We went for our honeymoon and really loved it. There's also a nice pub down the road if you fancy a change of scenery for a great meal too! Obviously the surrounding is beautiful. All the staff very pleasant.

Had a lovely weekend break at this hotel. Great for walking with stunning scenery. Room was very nice and although the bathroom was quite spacious, it was let down by the power of the shower. There is one thing that I cannot understand and that is why there is an extra charge for kippers at breakfast. Surely it cannot be the cost as they are quite cheap to buy. Other hotels we have stayed at seemed to have dropped the charge, Will the Langdale follow?

Thanks to the generosity of friends, we found ourselves being treated to a meal and luxurious overnight accommodation in this great hotel near Ambleside.
The room was "Ultimate" and very close to the reception (103). Perfectly quiet, and well appointed.
What looked like a Chinese style wall, opposite the enormous bed, opened up into a series of cupboards, with complimentary water and apples, hanging space, as well as doors leading into the wonderful bathroom. This was a treat in itself, with a double bath/jacuzzi. There was even space for a champagne chiller over the bath, and two champagne glasses. Unfortunately the minibar fridge was empty. Had there been a bottle of bubbly we might well have succumbed and enjoyed some fizz whilst enjoying the froth of the jacuzzi.
The meal at Purdey's was a real treat. An 8 course taster menu, with wines to match the different courses. Starting with "Salmon with beetroot sorbet and apple salad", through "Monkfish with Bombay potatoes and carrot bhaji" and "Potato and watercress soup" (superb!) right up to the exquisite "Toasted marshmallow with meringue and mango sorbet" it provided an excellent introduction to what the chefs here are capable of providing.
We slept very well after all of that! And nearly got lost in the very comfortable bed. (Did I mention it was enormous?!)
Morning saw a hearty Cumbrian breakfast which was very tasty. The only downside was the fact that the restaurant was a little too small for the number of guests, so there was quite a queue for a table.
After breakfast and a walk around the Langdale estate, a trip to the hotel's spa was a must. Superb facilities, with a swimming pool (perfect temperature!) sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and all beautifully well designed complex. Great changing rooms and showers.
We felt utterly spoilt and had a wonderful midweek break in this great hotel, and extremely grateful to our generous, and very well-informed friends who gave us this wonderful treat!

Unfortunately our holiday was cut short by some bad news from back home. We had to check out the next day but the hotel management were very understanding. The hotel, the setting and facilities were excellent and we hope to return in the near future to explore the fantastic location.

We stayed at the hotel for our anniversary, the hotel was nice, but we've had better for the same money at other Lake District hotels. We stayed in a signature room.

The room was nicely decorated and the bathroom was nice, the spa bath was a great touch, the bed was comfortable, the room was very small only just enough room to walk around the bed the windows opened onto a walkway past the window so we didn't feel like we could have the curtains open.

The breakfast in the hotel restaurant was lovely the staff were great the food was good quality and well cooked. When we arrived on Friday at 9pm the only food available was burgers or sandwiches and it a bit too far to drive back to Ambleside, we ended up having steak sandwiches which were OK but could have been made a lot better with a few simple twists, for example they came on a processed sesame bun instead of homemade crusty bread.

Te staff were friendly and polite but didn't go out of their way to help. There was no parking near the room and we had to walk with our stuff in the rain.

Overall everything was OK but not fantastic.
