“Nice stay, but attention to detail needs sorting.”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

We had a 2 night mid-week stay at this hotel, our arrival at reception was dealt with speedily and with efficiency. We were given a room in the Fellside complex and found it a pleasant room, although if I was being picky there were some scratches on the furniture and the wall needed repainting. Rooms are warm, very sound proof and well equipped, although a fridge would not go amiss, the bed is big and comfy and it would be nice to have a extra pillow without having to ask. We didn't eat in the hotel apart from breakfast, which was tasty and plentiful.

WAINWRIGHT'S INN: This is an inn which is part of the hotel, although it's a 5 minute walk away, not too much of a problem apart from the safety aspect of it being on an unlit country road, take a torch and wear an item of light coloured or reflective clothing. Food is lovely and plentiful, the beer is even nicer.

SPA: We used the spa and the Terrace attached to the spa, staff were attentive and friendly, although the spa pool and facilities can get very busy and you're not allowed in the pool between 2 and 3 as the local schoolchildren are using it.

Overall, a pleasant stay, but as an earlier reviewer said, there is something lacking in the overall ambience.

This is a slightly more tricky review to write than I expected, we stayed for a few nights and had an enjoyable time, however we felt that something was lacking! There's nothing wrong with the hotel, so maybe it's just that the ambience is not 'us', having stayed elsewhere in The lakes previously...maybe that's the issue.
We had a fabulous room, large and very comfortable with great facilities including baths, en suite and sitting areas and I truly loved the room, a great place to go back to when the reception areas did not appeal.
The hotel is part of a 'village' style resort and the landscape is very pleasant, you can wander on site and see the Cabins and Cottages on offer as an alternative to the hotel or Brimstone. There's a choice of bars/restaurants and it's a very flat short walk to Wainwrights Pub (very good traditional pub food and great staff, I believe it's part of the hotel also) and Elterwater village, Tip-bring a torch for the evenings. The Pool area is lovely and a definite benefit after a day walking, or a day dodging bad weather, we didn't use the Spa so cannot comment.
The hotel staff were good and the food was good.
Just a little thing....on a couple of occasions something on offer drink-wise in one bar was not necessarily available at the other....even though the waiter had the drinks components in front of him to be able to make the requested drink.....maybe there's a reason I don't understand.....but..odd in a 4 star hotel!
Overall- I think it comes down to personal preference and the style of this hotel just wasn't us (it's large and slightly impersonal). It is very good and I actually can't fault it, but we just didn't 'love it'.
It is a good hotel with great facilities but... just consider if it has the sort of ambiance you are hoping for, especially in the school holidays when there will presumably be lots of young families and children around.

Room Tip: Our room was great, but my tip would be take a Torch for going to Wainwrights.

My husband surprised me with an overnight stay and pamper and I adored every minute of it. Our suite was gorgeous and I didn't want to leave, wish I could of taken our room home. The breakfast was lovely and the spa area is so relaxing the pool is dreamy. I had a facial and it was very good, the beautician was friendly and the facial itself was relaxing. I would like to come again but for longer than a night as feel you do need at least a weekend here.

Excellent check-in with move to much better room at nil cost. Purdey's restaurant is a let down. Less than one third full but told no available table for an hour. Went to Wainwrights pub for super meal and guess what? On returning to the hotel ninety minutes later, the same tables in the restaurant were still empty!

Room Tip: In the winter try for room in main building - fair walk to some of the other rooms.

Myself and my fiancé stayed here for one night for a relaxing birthday treat. We stayed in one of the Signature rooms in a romantic gothic style. Room was lovely with a jacuzzi bath and bed was huge and so comfy!!
We used the spa which was nice but was busy with children being a Saturday which tainted our experience slightly but that's not a fault of the hotel!
Staff were all very polite and friendly, particularly the young man on reception who checked us in. I don't know his name but he had glasses on, he was an excellent first impression.
The only disappointment was to have chocolates etc in the room as a birthday surprise was very expensive and staff didn't seem willing to do anything extra to mark a special occasion (this was staff on the telephone when I rang).
All in all though, beautiful place and excellent service. Will definitely be returning and the location is superb!

I fell in love with this hotel many years ago and have been coming several times a year since but I think my love affair may be coming to an end! Standards are slipping, bathroom poorly cleaned for a second time, areas are starting to look tired, carpets marked, prices going up!! The spa area is nice but the pool is unpleasantly cold. The playroom is a lovely addition. Staff in the terrace bar and wainwrights are lovely but the food is just ok and expensive. I don't believe in being critical in forums like this unless the hotel has had their opportunity to comment, but my letter of comments on my last visit did not even get an acknowledgement yet alone a response.
