After a Sunday walking and working up an appetite,we struggled to find anywhere with a table free in Ambleside. We decided to give the Queens Hotel a go, and regretted it. Service was pleasant and efficient, but the food - two roast beefs - was terrible, the sort of cooking that gives British food a bad name, slabs of grey tasteless meat, uncooked cabbage, overcooked mushy and strangely acidic carrots. We risked a pudding, thinking nobody could mess up apple crumble - we were proved wrong.
