After a Sunday walking and working up an appetite,we struggled to find anywhere with a table free in Ambleside. We decided to give the Queens Hotel a go, and regretted it. Service was pleasant and efficient, but the food - two roast beefs - was terrible, the sort of cooking that gives British food a bad name, slabs of grey tasteless meat, uncooked cabbage, overcooked mushy and strangely acidic carrots. We risked a pudding, thinking nobody could mess up apple crumble - we were proved wrong.

I just wanted some good quality food and a decent couple of pints, where to go?
After doing the circuit of the town and being met with long queues or a reluctance to seat "just one" when they could squeeze 4 on a table I decided to give the Queen's Hotel a try.
No problems here; great staff, quickly delivered hot tasty food and the all important quality pint of ale. So good in fact I tried the food and of course beer 3 nights running.

Initially put off by the slightly tatty exterior and the interior which to some degree looks like it is trying to copy an airport lounge. However, if you are after good beer then this place is highly recommended, a good choice, all well kept, and no complaints when we tried to return a drink.

3 of us stayed in Ambleside for 4 nights & ate here each evening, having intended trying different places. The food was very good quality, reasonably priced & generous, which was a bonus as we were walking 8 - 10 miles each day. They were also running an offer of a free bottle of wine if 2 people ate 2 courses. The service was prompt & friendly & I would recommend any of the local ales on offer, too.
In the end, we came back each evening & worked our way through the menu, rather than going to other restaurants. All of the food we tried was similarly excellent, and never over £20 per person for 3 courses.
Well done to the staff & management for providing us with far better value & service than some places we've visited in the past.
