“Easter Monday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

We visited Chesters By The River again on Easter Monday for lunch and this really has become our favorite place to stop off in the lakes.

Everything about this place is just excellent - cakes, hot food, salads, Location, service and atmosphere; oh and our dog also loves it!!

Our recent visit on Easter Monday was busier than our others - however nothing more than we expected, with it being a holiday and how good Chesters is. We arrived around 1pm and both car parks were full and the place clearly busy, so we managed to park a short distance away (only a couple of minutes walk).

We arrived and waited 2 minutes for a table to come free outside - I got our table number and joined the queue to place our order. This being Easter Monday the queue was a little longer than previously experienced, however i would say within 10 minutes i was sitting back down and enjoying the sun at my seat outside. Our drinks arrived shortly afterwards and then followed our freshly prepared flatbread and salad sides - We both couldn't believe given how busy the place was how quickly our orders and the orders of those around us arrived. Only around 20 minutes from arrival to warm fresh and high quality food being served is exemplary. (even more so given the number of customers)

I add comments on tripadvisor sparingly and those that i do add, are to highlight excellence - this alongside a comment below Re:- Easter Monday Visit; nudged me into writing this. I was there too and the service was fantastic, a little wait in the sun on a bank holiday hurt nobody (be sure to apply suncream), the food is always great and satisfying.

“A disappointing & expensive experience!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

We visited ''Chesters' on an overcast weekday lunchtime & were surprised to find it very busy! A long queue had already formed & we wrongly assumed that this indicated self service. Progress was painfully slow with only one member of staff taking orders. We then realised that we actually needed to first find a table in order to study the menu. With some difficulty, we eventually located a vacant table but had to wait some considerable time for this to be cleared. Now with our choices made, we returned to join the even longer queue in order to place our simple order of scones, sausage roll & pork pie. After a long wait (& with no apology), our food arrived. It is disappointing to have to report that we found both the sausage roll & the pork pie (the latter served with a pleasant piccalilli) to be very solid & unappetizing. The pie in particular - although apparently of local origin - was heavy with little texture. Overall, our lunchtime experience proved to be hard work & unjustifiably expensive. Could this establishment be the victim of its own popularity - - ?

“When visiting the Lakes a stop here is a MUST!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014

We were lucky enough to stumble across Chesters on our last visit to the Lakes quite by chance and had to do the same walk again this time to make sure we could return. This has to be one of the best cafes I have had the pleasure of eating at, we went for breakfast before our walk from Elterwater and returned again afterwards for coffee and cake. All the beautiful cakes are home made and of the highest quality. The service we had was very friendly but they do get extremely busy and we had to queue to place our order for coffee and cakes at lunch time for 20 minutes so be prepared to be patient.....

“Easter Monday visit”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

This is my second review of Chesters and to be honest this place gets worse. Such a shame as the food is generally very good. Here on Easter Monday predictably busy but the crazy thing is all the seats are empty and everyone is queuing to order their food. The service has to be the slowest I have ever seen. They really need to get their acts together. They are so lapse with regards their customer service I'm surprised anyone visits here. You have all the ingredients of a great restaurant but are not able to serve the customers you attract.

“Cake Heaven”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

Brilliant place to stop while out walking. It can get extremely busy around lunch time, we gave up the first day we tried to eat here as it was just too busy. The queue was really long and people were hovering over tables. The staff do find getting in between tables and people a struggle. Our return visit was a few days later and we arrived after lunch and we successfully had tea and cake. The lemon and treacle slice was amazing! We left happy and content. The shop is excellent to browse around but is over priced.
