“Lovely welcoming stay!!!”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

My husband booked us a one night stay on the internet after getting a good price. Our room was not in the main house but in one of that Hideaway rooms which were lovely, clean, modern and spacious. Really enjoyed our stay and staff very welcoming and friendly. The breakfast was buffet style and there was a good choice of hot or cold breakfasts. Wish could have stayed another night and would stay in the Hideaway again. Thank you for a lovely stay !!

Room Tip: Can't really comment on the rooms in the house but the Hideaway rooms are lovely.

We stayed for one night on a very wet, dreary April mid-week, so not being able to do the planned activities like walks it dampened our spirits a little; so decided against eating out and made the most of our room.

Room was lovely in many ways, we had 17 - The Hideaway so not in the main building, which is a plus on this occasion, but walls/ceilings are thin, so when people in the upstairs hideaway decided to move about you knew about it.

But all in all it was a good clean, well laid out room. We liked the shutters over the windows which for privacy (due to other Hideaways visitors walking past, and over looked by main building) we had shut for the majority of the time. Views would have been better had the weather been clearer, yet despite the properties elevated position you are impaired by the main building and other buildings in view so do not see much of the lake, but view of the mountains is still good (weather permitting).

As nice as room is, and fact it’s a double shower, not only in size but actually has two powerful independently controlled heads, I would question it being ‘superior’ which is what we booked. But having no comparison to a standard room hard to judge.

Other niggles: TV/Remote functions not working correctly, table lamp not working (which we spotted early on arrival so reported, but other lighting was sufficient), no shelf in shower for gels/shampoo's. But these things only came apparent later on so didn’t get chance to bring up. Oh and on leaving, the 'inconsiderate numpty' owner of an Audi (no shock there then) whom decided it was okay to park blocking the 'drop off' ramp which was for hideaway customer to loan/unload vehicles.

These are only minor individual issues, but it's the attention to detail that gives more value for your money and makes your £95 more worthwhile when these things are spot on and then turns a good place into a great place.

The buffet breakfast was also good, with choices of cooked cereals, fruit juices etc, they also part wait on you with toast, coffee/tea, and ask if you want fried or scrambled eggs in addition to the poached eggs on the buffet with the bacon etc.

But unlike the weather we will not be too down on the place, as when looking around initially and then when in the local area, we felt we’d found one of the best places to stay in the area.

Staff were all friendly and approachable, check in and out was all done efficient and politely, so no qualms there.

Not any fault of the B&B, but when we looked initially at easting out we found it was going to be quite expensive, so a trip to Booths was in order for our munchies. We’d also advise not going to the chippy on Waterhead as it is a rip off, nice tasting good chips and fish, but a blatant rip off utilising its position as a tourist trap, which to be honest the whole areas does, hence latterly we chose to make use of the room and ate in rather than out at a restaurant.

All in all, we’d recommend this as a crash pad, especially when compared to some of the tattier looking places you could end up in in the vicinity or Ambleside town itself. Can’t speak for the main building but the Hideway we had was ideal for a couple.

Room Tip: If in a ground floor hideaway, check if anyone staying above, as you will hear them moving about.

Fantastic hotel, our room was lovely with a superb view of Waterhead Bay. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The breakfast was excellent and the dining room very light and airey. Our bathroom was luxurious, slate tiles and floor, quality toiletries included. However a bar would be nice so that after a days walking, you could relax and chat to other residents. Having said that, there was room service up till 9.00pm which we did use and again delivered by happy professional staff. A must to visit.

Room Tip: We politely asked for a room with a view and boy did we get one!

Was looking for a quaint yet reasonably priced hotel to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and the Lake House did not disappoint. As it was a special occasion we were given room 5 for its great view as well as being spacious with a modern bathroom. The breakfast was ok if you like a traditional cooked English breakfast, however would have been good to have a bit more choice.
The location of the hotel was exactly what we were after being only a short walk from Ambleside which was needed after a nice evening meal in the town. It was also right by where the boats depart meaning we had easy access to travel around the lake without needing to use the car.
Would definitely recommend this hotel for comfort, price and proximity to a more peaceful area of Lake Windermere.

We stayed for 3 nights in one of the 'hideaway' rooms, a self contained space that was like having our own holiday cottage. The room was spotless and nicely decorated, with tea/coffee, biscuits and lovely toiletries. Breakfast was good with a choice of cereals or granola, yoghurt fruit or a cooked breakfast which was delicious. It's only a 10-15min walk into Ambleside for shops and restaurants,(so plenty of choice for dinner) and Ambleside is a good place to start off for lots of walks. The Lake House has a public footpath next to it leading to Jenkins Crag and Wansfell Pike, with beautiful views from Jenkins Crag. For a rewarding walk you couldn't be better placed! Staff were friendly and helpful. The Lake District is always stunning and if you stay at the Lake House you can't go wrong, I can't wait to stay again!
