Ferndale Lodge
Ranked #68 of 102 Ambleside B&B and Inns
Reviewed 6 July 2013

Stayed Ferndale Lodge, Ambleside two nights in June 2013. Friendly welcome from Rob. B&B is few minutes from centre of Ambleside, with about ten free car spaces at the back of the B&B alongside the pay and display car park. Choice of breakfast options, plus clean rooms, comfy bed with all the amenities e.g. tea, coffee, towels etc. Two things, first I booked this through bookings.com when it would have been cheaper to book direct. Second the breakfast room was set out with a table for each room and staying there with friends in different rooms i.e. on different tables it was slightly difficult to have conversation not impossible though. I would stay there again but I would book direct.

We stayed here for 1 night while attending a wedding nearby. Staff were friendly and the room was ideal for us. It was clean, furnished well and had tea/coffee facilities too. We were given a variety of options for breakfast and was very good.
The bed was very comfy and we both had a decent nights sleep with no noise from other residents.

I like Cheese, I like Pilchards and I like Peanut butter. Put 'em all together and it'd be less than the sum of it's parts. That's Ferndale Lodge: a Cheese, Pilchard and Peanut butter sandwich.

The bathroom was clean but TINY. So small infact that it's virtually unusable for all but the slimmest. Ours was less than a metre wide and 2 long. Stick in a toilet, shower and sink and it's nearly impossible to use. I have a fat friend who woudln't have even managed to get in there. The sink is of small 'hand basin' type used in the downstairs loo.

Breakfast was nice and tasty but served in one sitting in a small room at 8.30. It's cramped, difficult to have a conversation with your friends/partner/wife and you have what you ordered the nighth before on a bit of paper. It was all very 1950's Blackpool landladyish. We were meeting friends in Elterwater at 9:30 so this was a problem for us. It may not be a problem for you but at least you now know that you have to ask for an earlier start - that's not explained when you arrive..

Parking was poor. You need to double park so I guess there's be some too-ing and froing in the morning. .

Location is good. as it's in ambleside and near everything. Which is true for pretty much every B&B in Ambleside - it's not New York after all.

Interestingly enough this is cheaper to book direct than through 'bookings.com'. Looking at the website, we overpaid for this stay quite considerably which may expalin why my opinion may differ from some of the others you read. At £25 per night I'd be a lot more forgiving, at the price we paid it's unforgiveable.

Well at least you learn something new every trip.

Room Tip: Lose some weight before trying the bathroom

For a couple looking for a warm welcome and somewhere great to stay that is also dog friendly ...Ferndale Lodge should be your first choice. Great location only a few minutes walk from all the key locations in Ambleside as well !

Very accomodating and flexible - we had to leave around 5am on the morning to get back to London and Glasgow and a generous contintental breakfast was delivered to our room the evening before. Fanstatic value for money as well.

In short, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Phone and book direct !

Spent three very comfortable nights here on a trip to the lakes. The room was compact but very clean and well equipped. The staff are welcoming and friendly. There is free parking at the rear of the guest house which is useful (although can be a tight fit!). There are a good selection of breakfasts to choose from, including traditional lakes breakfast with some very tasty Cumberland sausages. As the location is so close to the centre of town it's just a two minute walk to the shops, banks, pubs and restaurants.

It is what it is, basic clean accommodation. It's cheap and that's all you get. I come to the lakes to be out and about and just need somewhere to sleep. This place has no frills, just a clean place to sleep.

An excellent location, just a few minutes from the centre of town, the bus station and the start of several walks. Rooms are small but clean, comfortable and perfectly well equipped. Breakfasts are tasty and nicely presented in the front lounge. The owner is friendly and very helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back of the house are quiter
