“A trip to Buttermere”
Reviewed 18 October 2011

We stayed here at Hillsdale for two nights last weekend with friends & family and found this B&B excellent. There was a warm welcome at reception when we arrived accompanied by great advice for eating out and general guidance to make our short stay all the more fulfilling.

George was full of useful and local information and a really nice chap. He couldn’t do enough to make our stay just right. Weather reports and outdoor walking information were changed regular in the hallway if you are thinking of venturing out and local leaflets are available for those rainy days if you don’t want to get wet.

Rooms were spotless and there was a great breakfast also all the staff was friendly.

The town is just around the corner and all the pubs and restaurants are on tap right under your nose. Go to Dodd’s @ the top of the town it was mouth watering.

Free secure parking was only a couple of 100 yards away which made the stay even more hassle free.

Thanks The Birmingham 4.

We came to stay for 3 nights with our 6 month old baby, and George, Ann and their staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. They lent us a small fridge for our babies food and milk, and were very relaxed about her throwing it around their dining room. There is a parking space a short walk from the B and B which seems to be a bonus for such a central hotel. The rooms were clean and very comfortable and the breakfast was delicious.
They also have complementary passes for a spa a couple of miles away which we highly recommend, it is easily the most family friendly spa or gym I have been too, whilst also being great for adults.

We stayed here for a week in August, our second stay in lovely Ambleside and Hillsdale. We stayed in the large bay fronted window room at the front which was fantastic. A great room with everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. You also have the benefit of off street parking close by. The breakfast every morning was fantastic and set us up for the day even when walking 12 miles up and down mountains! A great location in the centre of Ambleside, close to the restaurants, pubs and shops and also great places to walk.

We arrived in the area about 7pm and were looking for somewhere to stay at a reasonable price. This was the 3rd guesthouse we visited and as soon as George came to reception to meet us we immediately felt he was a warm and genuine guy. The instant we saw the warm and cosy room available we took it! We stayed in room 4 and it was modern and tastefully decorated and the bed was nice and comfortable. The owners of this b&b obviously take pride in the service they give as there is very fine attention to decorative detail and they definitely have an eye for interior design. The room was so comfortable and had a warmth to it that it felt like a home from home. Actually it was even better than my bedroom at home. There is a personal touch about this guesthouse that you don't get from the more clinical looking travel lodges and/or hotels. The staff here are friendly and welcoming and provide such a great service. Breakfast was plentiful and there was a good choice. We will definitely be back and I will be recommending to friends and family!

Room Tip: Room 4 was great and had a nice comfortable bed

Thank you so much for your kind comments. We really appreciate the time that you take to post your review.
We do do our best to ensure that you have a friendly reception and a relaxing stay with us. We always think it good that the restaurants and pubs are only a short stroll away from us and that you can forget the car.

My fiancé and I stayed here from a Sunday to a Tuesday for a relaxing break in the lakes. This is exactly what we got. Hillsdale is in a great location in Ambleside; very central and a couple of minutes walk from pubs, restaurants and shops. The room and bathroom was clean and cosy and the whole B&B had a nice friendly feel to it. Dorothy, our host whilst the owners were away, was fantastic. She was very welcoming and gave us some great tips on walks and local eating places. She also did a cracking full english which set us both up for the day! The only small gripe I had is that the TV emitted a high pitched whine when on which made watching it fairly irritating. It was a very small issue though in an otherwise perfect stay.

Stayed here last weekend with my girlfriend. I would just like to agree with previous reviews - this B&B has everything you are looking for a short break in the lakes. Very friendly , helpful staff, easy to find, 2 mins walk from main shops and bars. Only minor complaint was I found the bed very soft and the bathroom quite small. Thats just my opinion.- overall had great stay and would recommend staying here to anyone.

* note B&B has its own alloacted parking spaces about 2 mins drive from hotel - you can park right outside to unload your stuff but can only park on road for an hour.

Having returned from our 4 night stay at the Hillsdale B&B, we feel fully relaxed and this is a testament to the helpfulness and comfort of the establishment.

This was our first stay in a B&B (we normally stay in hotels) and I must say that if this is setting the precedence then it will be hard to follow. The room we stayed in, room 6, was of average size compared to some of the other rooms in the building based on what we saw when we walked past as they were being cleaned. Our room did have an eave running through it and as such, if you were tall, would have to duck to pass it. My wife is only 5'5" and she only just made it underneath on her way round the bed to get in it. The room was clean and presentable and there is plenty of tea and coffee available. The shower took a little bit of tweaking to get it to the right temperature and once you did it only fluctuated slightly during a 10 min shower. The bed, as mentioned in previous reviews, was a little soft for my liking but it's personal taste as my wife found it ok.

Breakfast was ample and nourishing. There was 5 types of cereal available as well as fruit and juices. There was toast of which you could choose white, brown or mixed; to accompany your cooked breakfast. This, if not asked for any alteration was 1 sausage, 2 rashers of bacon, 1 fried egg, tomato, mushrooms and baked beans. As I experienced and what I saw of other guests Dorothy was very open to all requests. She also provided your choice of a large (4 cup) pot of tea or coffee.

Dorothy's knowledge of the town and surrounding area was excellent. She provided extensive information on restaurants, shops and attractions. Included in the price of room is access to one (or 2 if you're a couple) of 4 passes to the nearby Langdale Spa. We did not use these but on talking to another couple who did said it was very nice.

There are loads of things to do in the local area and Dorothy had a large selection of leaflets on display as well as a local area brochure in the room. The only one I would comment on would be the Lakes Aquarium. It was massively over priced ( £9.85 each) considering that, even when taking photos of pretty much everything, we still walked through in about 35 mins and there wasn't a lot of animals/fish that you were that interesting.

To summarise, we had a comfortable stay in a nicely located B&B with a great host. I would recommend this B&B to a friend.
