“Beautiful Family Stay”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

YHA Ambleside is filled with friendly staff and eager travelers from around the world. Great place to stay for a few nights while viewing the lake district but I don't recommend staying without children. The hostel is located right on the lake with beach access and a beautiful dining area and bar. I would definitely stay again.

Thanks for your review, I'm glad you found us to be a friendly and beautiful place to stay. Our pier is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon and, for those hardy enough to brave the chilly waters, to take a dip!

Went down with a few mates to climb mountains and go boating and all the usual lake district activites for a week to get away from city life/work. Paid £30 a night for a private room with four beds, which is good, but misleading as advertised rooms had an en suite and we had to share bathrooms with other hostel-goers. Having said that, I was very happy with the room. It was cleaned relatively well and beds were made (not what i expected from a hostel). Could have done with another stool or a chair but good rooms overall and good view, although the window was very rusty and took a lot of effort to open/close.

4 days into our stay, a school turned up. The children were loud and they were everywhere, running around in the middle of the night and banging on doors and constantly using every facility in sight so other guests could not.

The last night of our stay we were playing music on a tiny speaker at 10pm. On the door of our hostel room, it clearly stated 'please keep noise to a minimum after 11pm' until something like 7am. As we were not breaking the hotels rules, we assumed this would be fine. However, we got a knock on the door from staff and a rude teacher. The hotel staff stood by, expressionless, as said teacher barked at us to not play music or she would call the police - again, coming from such a small speaker, is not against the law, especially on private property which states you can make noise until 11, which was a little rich coming from someone whos children disturbed everyone in the hostel by running around the night prior to this.

Obviously not wanting to get the police involved, as they have better things to do than calm down a woman who resembled a horse on her 'im a teacher i have authority' power trip, we decided to co-operate and turn down our low-medium music at 10pm.

On returning, I complained that I could not use facilities due to children being everywhere and they kept me up at night running around. The people at YHA gave me a voucher for one free night specifically for use at Amblesides YHA even though I live in Birmingham - how about just refunding me or two stays at any hostel, or 50% off two nights in any hostel, YHA?

Another complaint - we paid for wifi, but were not told until AFTER we paid £15 that wifi only reached the resteraunt so were unable to watch Netflix in our rooms on our tablets in the evening. Annoying.

After this experience I will never use YHA again and will tell every holiday maker I know to avoid these hostels.

Rant over.

I travelled for 3 nights with friends (have also stayed with family) and, after a long day we arrived and the staff were very helpful in getting us into our lake view room as quick as possible! Food at the lakeside is great value for money as is the breakfast service. Our room was very clean, quiet and the beds were very comfortable. We used lockers in our room to store luggage etc and brought locks for extra security (although no-one else did.) There are many areas to eat or sit such as the bar, on the terrace, in the gardens, in the self catering kitchen and dining room or in the larger dining room. At the hostel there is also a large drying room which is very useful and spacious for all wet kit. The self catering kitchen is fantastic as there is a lot of fridge space, shelf space and it is fully equipped with all utensils etc. The staff at reception and around the hostel were very helpful towards us, calling taxis for us, helping to plan activities and at advice on routes into town etc. Only disadvantage is the luggage store on our day of departure cost £1 per entry, which is very frustrating when check out is at 10am and we left at about 8pm in the evening. Overall fantastic short stay would undoubtedly visit again.

Room Tip: At this hostel the room are not classed by age like at many others such as under 18 males. This is t...

This hostel is one of the largest in the lakes, in one of the most popular areas. Therefore you don't get a sense of character for the hostel and the staff like you do in the smaller ones. But that's not a bad thing in this case. Because of the central location to Ambleside we didn't spend much time in the hostel anyway.
Good kitchen facilities, dramatic views and beautiful scenery.

Arrived for an over night stay at the YHA Ambleside with a group of work friends on a very sunny Saturday afternoon. Allocated our room on the first floor with magnificent views over lake Windermere . The room was very basic but clean with 3 bunk beds, 6 small lockers plus a sink . On the negative side the toilet and shower facilities are shared and not always the cleanest of places . Also despite the fantastic view the room looked out onto the roof of the bar and was littered with a variety of objects , socks, beer cans , empty food trays etc . The windows were in need of a good clean and I don't think they had been attended to since the hostel was refurbished . On the whole a comfortable night and for the price and view I would say value for money.

Thanks for your feedback. I've flagged up the issues you raised with our Houskeeping Manager - hopefully next time you come you'll be even more dazzled by the view looking out of clean windows without the distracting bits on the rooftop!

My daughter and I had a private room on the third floor that overlooked the lake. The facility and our room was clean and utilitarian as expected of a hostel. It is a pleasingly modern mix with natural wood and stone. We particularly enjoyed the view from the long deck overlooking the lake. Staff were great and helpful. We enjoyed visiting with other guests.....the staff and English guests gave great tips on sites in the area . Also as two American women travelers, we felt safe and welcomed.
