“underawed, over priced.”
Reviewed 1 September 2008

Well this is a first as I've never felt the need to complain about a meal however it would be a gross understatement to say we were disappointed by our experience at the Drunken Duck. From their website(and prices) and various reviews we were expecting something special but got one of the most disappointing dining experiences ever. Bland food, eclectic combinations that don't work, poorly cooked food, unwashed spinach and so on so on. By the time it came to the deserts three of us had given up, the final one of our party was met with undercooked pastry. A dining experience at the Drunken Duck is the Emporers Clothes at the moment. Admittedly a lovely view (not from the restaurant though that be a dark bit at the end of hte pub) however I could sit on the wall outside and drink that view in for free. Idea's well above it's station. Give it a miss and gone to one of the other many other places in the lakes, e.g. Langstrath Inn, that puts out excellent food at about 1/2 the price with gorgeous views from the restaurant.

“Fabulous location. Great...”

Fabulous location. Great 'Real Ales' plus Belgian beers & good ciders. Straight forward lunch menu with excellent food. It's not really a standard pub and is a bit pricey if considering the evening meal menu or rooms to stay in. Well worth a visit when in the Lake District area.

“desperately disappointed”
Reviewed 25 July 2008

If you are thinking of eating at the Drunken Duck please read this first.

After reading great reviews last year in the Times and Telegraph we were looking forward to enjoying a meal at the Drinken Duck.
Its location is superb but car parking is a nightmare and I suspect most customers are drivers.
The bar area is small but well stocked with above average priced drinks.
The dining area is directly adjacent to the bar and the tables are in close proximity making intimate conversation impossible but a great way to observe other diners who appeared equally disappointed. My husband ordered roast garlic and rocket soup, I did not wish for a starter but did taste his and both of us agreed that it was warm cream with a hint of garlic. Our main course was duck with celeriac mash, roasted apricots and shallots. When this arrived we spent a few minutes searching for the celeriac mash, we found it at last under the duck breast - it must have been spread with a palatte knife so thin was the layer. The apricots and shallots were easier to spot. The large white plate gave no hiding place to the tiny shrinking quartet of embelishments. The duck was cooked very well but it was a good job we had taken time to look for the celeriac mash or we would have finished the meal in 5minutes rather than 7. Deciding it wasn't worth risking a sweet we ordered coffee which arrived accompanied by a slate tile bearing four small sweetmeats - three of thick fudge and one meringue. The bill came to £69.95, this included two glasses of wine. We have dined in some wonderful places before and haute cuisine or no haute cuisine this was a rip off. We were not once asked was 'everything was alright' . WAKE UP DRUCKEN DUCK - NOTHING FAILS LIKE SUCCESS!
