We often visit the area walking and thought this time we would give this quirky little place a try!

From the moment we arrived we were very well looked after and shown to our table in front of the cosy fireplace. Must say it brought a smile to both of our faces when we noticed that the daily written menu had our name and the other guests names written into the restaurant introduction! There was plenty of variety on the menu, took a while to chose.

We used our taste card so the price was reasonable, without this i would have classed it quite pricey.

All of our food was very well prepared and tasted delicious, we will be returning that is for sure!

“2 different experiences in 1, food lovely, cleanliness poor”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2014

The staff are friendly and the food is lovely, if not a bit over priced. But it was hot and tasty and there was plenty to choose from, if not almost too much to choose from. So everyone is catered for and there are gluten free options etc... so this was all good.
Then there comes to the rest of it. There was broken glass on the floor under our table, which we noticed when my 2 year old kept dropping the colouring provided by the staff... so she was unable to pick it up as I was scared she would cut herself. The table opposite had food on the floor all around it. This was no a case of someone had just left and they hadn't got around to it yet, as it wasn't touched the whole time we were there and the table was clear of plates etc when we arrived. I then took my little one to change her nappy, to find that the changing area was stuck behind the door, and while changing her I was knocked flying by someone coming into the toilet area. The changing matt is by a clear window, so people eating in the back area of the restaurant can see me changing my babies bum.... !! why is this not frosted glass like in any other toilet area. I then went to use one of the toilets and was disgusted. I have seen cleaner public toilets in a busy town. The area is shabby and dirty. A black vase of black false flowers shoved in the corner was thick of dust and clearly have been collecting dust for a long time. It was a shock as the restaurant has a lovely relaxing feel and its warm and inviting...then the toilets are like you have gone into a different greasy spoon workmens café........... I even told my mother to go and have a look at the toilets as its so disgusting... the water pipes are dirty and thick of dust..needs a bloody good clean and a lick of paint.....will we be going back...highly unlikely..1st visit and probably the last unless the clean the place

CathyS - I am pleased that you enjoyed the food at Lucy's on a plate (although I do notice that you have placed a review on Trip Advisor for our other establishment Lucy4 which I have made a request to remove as you cannot review a place without dining there - or at least that is my understanding of Trip Advisor). As for your comments about the other things I would like to respond - first of all if there was glass on the floor, it would have been prudent to mention it at the time so that we could deal with it immediately - the area that we have for our young guests where there are pens and paper and reading books is not devoid of glassware (we don't penalise our grown ups for having children, anymore than we penalise the children for having grown ups) and sometimes accidents happen without people telling us and they push it into all sorts of hidden places. As far as the loos are concerned - there are two loos - one for ladies and one for gents - from your description I believe you must have visited the gents (not that this is an excuse, but boys are not quite as 'clean' as girls at the best of times ... and we don't generally put any nice things in there) - it's unfortunate now that everyone expects toilets to be like the Ritz and with every imaginable luxury ... thankfully some places are making their loos unisex ... not something I necessarily like using ... but when you're short of space they're great from a restaurateurs point of view. The baby changing is as you state, a small space in the area near the loos ... but we do keep it stocked up and there is a proper nappy bin (I think we were one of the few places where men and women could change babies without being discriminated against, and as far as I am concerned somewhere to change the baby is great - we're not blessed with acres of space so we have to make do and mend. There is a roller blind on the window, so our guests can pull it down for 'privacy sake' however, I always thought that the babies liked looking out of the window at the plants and things and anything that was moving - my biggest worry is that if the window is open then might fall out ... unlikely, but I'm a safety girl! (for those reading this there is a 'corridor' outside the window with plants and trees and a fence and really isn't overlooked by anything or anyone -unless they really are intent on craning their necks) The loos are checked and cleaned daily - I went in some loos at a very pucker restaurant the other week (not in Ambleside, but a city) and was heartened to think that at least they recognised that the guests do NOT eat their food in the loos, nor do they spend an extortionate amount of time there - ie. they were serviceable but not overly palatable. Ironically if you search through some of our TA comments there are some people who comment in a positive way about the loos. They are just that ... serviceable - with handwash, handtowels, toilet paper and mirrors (well, in the ladies there are lots of mirrors) ... they don't have sofas, hot flannels or real flowers - we save that for the front of house. So, whilst I appreciate that this offended you ... I don't see why you would choose not to revisit us for the reason that you came to us in the first place, which is for good food, relaxed atmosphere and a place that welcome everyone - whether they're with family, friends, loved ones or on their own ... perhaps you might like to visit India and experience their 'Pig Loos' ... not that's an experience NOT to be missed!

“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2014

This was our third visit to Lucy's on a Plate and it was just as enjoyable as the previous two. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed - just what we needed after a long walk from Bowness to Ambleside. There is a large variety of amazing cakes making it almost impossible to choose just one.
Very generous portions - hard to recommend just one cake in particular as they are all equally scrummy.
Friendly helpful service. We will definitely be back.

Dear LaurenH ... a girl after my own heart ... 'if tea is the best drink, then cake has to be the best meal' and whilst you cannot decide which one you like the best ... let me help you make that choice ... I love the stripey cake, served warm and slightly melting and deliciously chocolatey ... whilst the chocolate Guinness cake has a superb hint of the Irish good stuff ... but remarkablychocolatey ... the lemon and raspberry is just a cheek sucker ... and as for the Westmorland dream cake, that's a revelation and with over 20 cakes and traybakes to choose from, you'll never get bored with all that we have to offer ... so, we look forward to seeing you again before too long ... and once again, thank you for your time and review ... much appreciated. Any more cake?? xxxx
