Sorry but I just can't understand how our stay was so at odds with other people's reviews - Diane & I found the place tired (threadbare carpet) and tatty (cobwebs : stained, mismatched & broken decor). Worst of all, the bucket chair in our room (15) was so dirty we dare not sit!

Food was OK : a bit overpriced and Service slow to say the least!

In my opinion, greatly overrated! Won't be staying here in future!

What a lovely stay we have just had here! The family run hotel was very relaxed and warm. The grounds are gorgeous. The food good value, hot and filling. The fire burning all night in a cosy lounge to sit and feel at home in. The room we stayed in number 5 was small with no real view was the only criticism (would have liked a view of grounds). The staff so nice and make you very welcome. We had our packed lunch and it was very tasty and again plenty! We have already recommended to friends and we will return again one day for sure. Thank you for a lovely stay xx

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room choose number 5 you will sleep well but not a good view of grounds

Me and my partner stopped here for two nights on a Groupon Deal . The hotel and staff were both fantastic a really lovely place to stay at very reasonable rates good food not over priced and great location to discover the rest of the near by lakes and the lovely market town of Cockermouth . Or if its a couple of days RandR you require with no hussle and bussle this spot fits the bill perfectly.

We were only staying for one night on our way home so we opted for a room with only a shower (not a bath) for £60 including breakfast. The room was at the end of the hotel facing the rear in what I think may have been the old servants' quarters. It was small but adequate and had a fitted wardrobe, tea/coffee/biscuits, modern tv, good central heating and good shower. It had a very small window which had been increased in size by the fitting of a velux window in the roof. Overall, the room was clean and comfortable. However, during the night we had very heavy rain and the sound of this landing on the roof and in particular the velux window certainly interferred with our sleep. We did not see any of the other rooms ( we had been offered a room with a bath for £70) but I would imagine they would have been larger and, if not set into the roof space like ours, would not have suffered from the noise created by the bad weather. Overall the hotel was very quiet.
The hotel is an old grand building set in very well kept grounds, It is on elevated grounds so has good views. It does have an outside terrace with tables and chairs and I can well imagine it would be a wonderful place to be on a fine summers evening. The half dozen or so peacocks that roam around certainly adds to the relaxed and pleasant atmosphere that we found existed around the hotel.
It has three very spacious and comfortable public rooms / lounges with a well stocked bar that served excellent Yates beer !! There was also good Wi Fi.
The restaurant was large and pleasant but the food was only of "pub" standard. However, as the prices were of "pub" rates I did not have a problem with that. The breakfast was good.
The staff were very friendly and the service throughout was excellent.
If I had wanted a better room with good restaurant quality food then I would expect to pay a lot more so all in all a very pleasant hotel representing excellent value.

Stayed here for just one night, lovely room apart from huge cobweb and spider we found later. Comfortable bed.
The food was brilliant all home made and lots of it at good prices.
Breakfast was also good.
Will come back here again and do recommend it.

Room Tip: we had the front room no 9 with resident spider. others might not have him!!
