“Slightly tired”
Reviewed 15 November 2008

We stayed in a 'classic double' room for one night in November. On arrival I was disappointed at the size of the room and immediately noted the dreadful furniture which was dated, damaged and well overdue being replaced. The rest of the room was clean with the usual additions ... hairdryer, tea & coffee facilities. The en-suite bathroom was clean although did have a cigarette burn in the carpet. What saved this £98 room was the comfort of the bed. I had a wonderful nights sleep followed by a very enjoyable breakfast. Female receptionist very pleasant, male waiter could take some lessons from her!
Overall I doubt very much that I will be staying at Hundith Hill in the future but don't let that deter you especially if you, like me, enjoy a good nights sleep.

I organised 17 rooms at Hundith for a management conferance.
From the moment we enquired until the morning we left we were looked after in a fantastic manner.
Nothing was too much trouble , all rooms were great and the food was excellent.
I would recommend the hotel for all sorts of occasions - meetings, dinner for two, weddings, christmas parties.

This was my second visit to Hundith and nothing had changed, me and my family had a fantastic weekend. We were made to feel welcome and the staff remembered us from our first visit, which i thought was great.

Our room was great with plenty of room and very well decorated, the food was simply fantastic and no one went hungry during our stay, we ate from the bar meal menu and found plenty of choice for us our two young ones, the bar was busy and full of locals who were all very friendly and chatty.

There was lots of places to stroll and sit outside, and even horses to look at as there are stables etc set within the grounds, Cockermouth is a lovely little town and we have visited the town about four times now, and recommend the Brewery tour and Wordsworth house as places to visit.

We had a great stay at the Hotel and will be visiting again at Easter

We arrived quite late in the evening and found a bar room full of drunks including a sleeping and snoring woman. We had booked a 'luxury' room but found ourselves in a standard room. The bathroom was adequate but the bedroom itself was far from acceptable. The double bed was lumpy and hard with palpable metal springs. The room itself was not much larger than the bed and decorated in a dingy mid 90s orange. The view of Lorton Vale was actually of the car park. The walls were so thin that we could hear every movement and sound including snoring and flushing toilets. The next morning I went to reception to complain. The young man was very helpful but looked quite nervous and said that Phil would have to deal with our complaint. When Phil arrived he made no eye contact but listened to my complaint. I said that we had booked a luxury room with a view and that we had in fact spent a very uncomfortable night in a very small room.He walked away from me telling a very embarrassed receptionist to 'check them out'.Clearly there was no room for discussion.
I would not recommend this hotel as, although on paper it looked good,in actual fact it was overpriced and probably more interested in the cash earned from conferences and weddings than to the comfort of individuals. Unfriendly to say the least.

My wife and I stayed at Hundith Hill in August of 1971 on our very first trip to the U.K. We loved it so much that we returned in 1973 1984 and 2004 for longer stays with friends.
Unless things have changed, this hotel provided us with what every American longs to experience in a English country hotel. I am of course referring to cheerful rooms, beautiful views, impectable service, good manners, simple yet delightful food, and most important of all very few other Americans.
If you long to experience something you have only seen on PBS, I would highly recommend this lovely hotel.
