Really off the beaten track. 500 years of history in this lovely house which is still a home. Only open Monday afternoons during summer months, and staffed by enthusiastic volunteers, who can tell you when it was built, and who has lived there, and why it has never been sold... every tour is different!

Do you like your historical attractions to feature an audio guide by 'Cecil the cavilere', voiced by an X factor runner up, followed by, outside in the grounds, 'Basil the badgers aMAZING wildlife maze? Do you require huge directional signs starting at the M6 junctio, followed by "Hey, you just missed the Isel hall experience" road signs. Are you unable to grasp that ;Elizabethan' is REALLY OLD and need compter graphics that tell you Queen Elizabeth was one cool dude?
Yes?
then don't come here.
Deliciously low key and non corporate (in all the right ways), Isel Hall is a nice refuge from the touristy heritage trail. So low key you may have difficulty finding it, and you certainly need to be lucky (or careful) to hit the limited opening times, it makes a welcome change from coach trip or kiddie dominated historical houses. Most of the guides are volunteers, so everytime you visit will be different - you will be taken round by people, not mass produced clones. Some may stumble ocassionaly ("The west wing was destroyed by fire in.. errrr ... just a moment..rustle rustle.. 1798...."), but I think this makes it much more enjoyable, more human.
Strongly recomended by perhaps older people.who have done all the well known places.
(By the way, I did NOT visit in Jan 2012, it wasn't open, but the options wouldn't allow me to go back as far as last year!)
